Role
The University of Edinburgh is currently offering part-time opportunities for 5 students to join the Help Services Team as EdHelp Assistants in the Main Library. The Help Services Team supports students with using the library and provides help and advice to users on queries related to Library, IT, Student Finance and Student Administration functions. They produce the ID cards for new students at the start of each academic year, and run the Card Collection Event at the Main Library. Within this role, you will support and enable the delivery and provision of customer service at the Main Library, supporting Card Services and operational tasks which support the running of the Library Helpdesk.
This is an exciting opportunity for you to enhance your customer service skills, and gain experience of working in a team in a lively Library environment.
You can expect to start work on the 1st September 2025 and work until the 29th May 2026. You will attend one or two paid training shifts between 1st-14th September, with your regular shift pattern beginning from the week commencing 15th September. The successful students can expect to work between 8-10 hours per week, on-campus, in the Main Library. The pay for this role is £12.83 per hour, plus £2.32 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your first payment date (should this position start when expected) will be 28th October 2025.
Duties and responsibilities
- Providing a first point of contact for EdHelp Services including IT, Library, Student Administration, and Student Finance, and using the EdHelp knowledge base to diagnose and resolve enquiries;
- Categorising calls received in the Unidesk enquiry management system, creating and assigning, or escalating calls, to an appropriate specialist advisor or team where relevant;
- Carrying out high volume transactions including circulating library materials, and replacing and issuing University cards;
- Assisting users to make effective use of EdHelp services by ensuring all computers and printers, photocopiers and Bibliotheca self-check machines are operational, replacing consumables, and conducting searches for lost items.
Skills and experience
Essential criteria:
- A current University of Edinburgh student (this post is designated for UoE student employment; therefore, you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). You also must not hold the position of ‘Resident Assistant’;
- Based in the UK for the duration of the work, able to work on campus when required (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications), and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person before the 22nd August if you are a British or Irish Passport holder;
- Demonstrable ability to effectively operate computing systems, and a familiarity with Windows or Mac OS;
- A proven ability to deal with a variety of users, for example, having a considerate attitude to students who may find exam situations stressful, and a proven ability to handle sensitive information;
- Evidence of strong time management skills;
- Evidence of strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate with a diverse range of users.
