Role
*Ringfenced to LJMU Graduates only*

We are seeking a motivated graduate with a strong interest in DNA biotechnology to work on an Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Catalyst (IBIC) funded project, in collaboration with BioCheck UK. The aim of this project is to develop aptamers for use in meat speciation  (identifying the animal origin of meat products).Aptamers are single-stranded DNA molecules that mimic the binding properties of natural antibodies. These “chemical antibodies” can be used in a range of applications, including as biorecognition elements in immunoassays such as ELISA and lateral flow assays.
The project focuses on developing new, reliable assays for the food industry. These tools are essential for verifying that meat products are accurately labelled and authentic, meet religious dietary requirements, are safe for consumption, and help to prevent food fraud.

Duties and responsibilities
As a Research Assistant in Industrial Biotechnology, you will be expected to contribute to the development of aptamers against meat speciation biomarkers by perform daily enzymatic reactions, DNA purification, gel analysis and PCR assays and preparing aptamer pools for next generation sequencing.

Skills and experience
The role would suit a recent graduate or postgraduate with a minimum 2:i in Biotechnology or related subject. Experience with performing PCR assays and running DNA gels (Agarose and polyacrlyamide) is preferred but not essential as full training will be provided

Location
LJMU
