Description

Role

The University of Salford is looking for current registered students from its four schools who represent the diversity of our student body to act as a student representative on student casework panels.

The University has a range of casework procedures which apply to students. Procedures require panels to consider cases and reach decisions/outcomes.

So, if you are interested in ensuring that there is a student voice heard during student panel meetings and you are keen to contribute to fair and equitable decision making, this opportunity may be of interest.

Panel Members act as nominees of the Students’ Union, and are there to represent the student voice, not to advocate for the student whose case is being heard.

You will work alongside members of university staff, and occasionally members of professional organisations to hear and reach decisions on cases.

Panel Members are required to read all the paperwork relating to the case in advance of the panel meeting. This may involve reading complex and detailed paperwork, as well as understanding the specific Procedure for the case being considered. In advance of the meeting, Panel Members will meet to agree questions they want to ask in the meeting.

Following the meeting, Panel Members will consider the case and agree on an outcome. In some cases, sanctions may be applied to students, these may range from a written warning, an action which a student must undertake, or in the most serious circumstances, the sanction or removal from a course, or expulsion from the University may be applied.

All Panel Members receive support and training. Training takes the form of an online session which provides information about the role and expectations, and an outline of the Procedures. In addition, we can also offer opportunities to ask questions about a case or processes in advance of a Panel meeting.

Job duration: 28th August 2025 to 30th June 2026

Frequency and hours: Due to the flexible nature of this role, there are no fixed hours and opportunities are advertised when Panels are scheduled. The University aims to provide at least two weeks’ advance notice.

Panels normally last between two to three hours and you will be required to read a case file in advance of the meeting (generally two to three hours of preparation work). Students are paid for preparation as well as attendance at the meeting.

Applications close 31st July 2025
