Library and Student Services are currently recruiting a Study Assistant; this role is to support university students who have additional support needs, typically they may have attended a specialist provision during their school years or may have had full time LSA support.
Working 1:1 this role is to help students transition to an adult learning environment, to help them to become independent and to adapt to the academic demands of HE.
This role would be required to support students during their timetabled lessons and for half an hour before and after, if students wish to revise their work or prepare for lectures. This role does not require any personal care, shopping or any off-campus, non-university activities.
A DBS is required for this job role. You would be part of the Autism Team and work closely with them.
They can offer you access to National Autistic Society accredited SPELL training.
Expected start date: Monday 22nd September 2025 with a training day of Thursday 18th September 2025
Expected end date: end of the academic year
Expected interview date: Week beginning 21st July 2025. This will be remotely via teams if you are selected for interview.
The number of days and hours worked by study assistants are flexible and based upon student need.
Duties and responsibilities
Typical duties:
Meet the student outside their accommodation or at the taxi drop off point.
Escort student to their lecture/seminar/workshop; helping them to find their way around the campus; and building their familiarity with the campus.
You will remain with your student in their lesson helping them to feel confident and able to access their tasks.
The student will take their own notes in lectures but you may need to jot things down such as exam dates, room changes and hand-in deadlines.
This role does not require any personal care, shopping or any off-campus, non-university activities.
You would support students to access any activities run by the Autism Team such as lunchtime socials and workshops.
Must be able to work within professional boundaries.
Enabling strategies
Liaise with the student to help them to work in an appropriate way. This might include support with planning and organising time and workload.
Monitor and address any anxiety causing issues as they arise, helping to avoid escalation.
Support student in teaching sessions including lectures, seminars, workshops and practical sessions
Effective communication
Complete timesheets accurately each week
Escalate any issues to the Disability Officer (Autism) at the earliest opportunity
Maintain confidentiality at all times
Keep accurate records of time spent with student for payment processes as required.
Contribute as appropriate to the evaluation of service provision
Attend training as requested by the Disability Officer (Autism)

Skills and experience
Essential criteria
Punctual, well organised and reliable
Excellent written skills including spelling, punctuation and grammar
Excellent communication and time keeping skills
Ability to work within professional boundaries and maintain confidentiality
An Enhanced DBS check is required for this job role
Knowledge and experience of autism
Enthusiasm for working with autistic students
Desirable Criteria
Educated to degree level or equivalent (Documentary evidence required)
Previous experience in a similar role
The ability to navigate a university virtual learning environment
