Role
The University of Leicester is looking for enthusiastic Sports Assistants / Lifeguards to join our Sport & Active Life team at the Danielle Brown Sports Centre. You will play a key role in ensuring the safe and smooth operation of the sports facilities, providing excellent customer service to students, staff, alumni, and the public. This role directly supports the University’s commitment to promoting wellbeing and creating an inclusive, welcoming environment for all.
Duties and responsibilities
You will supervise swimming pool users, ensuring safety across all wet side facilities, and act as a first responder in emergencies. The role involves welcoming members, controlling access, processing bookings, monitoring bather loads, and delivering a first-class customer experience. You will carry out health and safety checks, including regular pool and spa water tests, and report any maintenance issues. Cleaning of activity areas and assisting with the sale of memberships are also part of the role, along with supporting sports events and wider University activities where required.
Skills and experience
Applicants must hold a valid National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) and have previous customer service experience. Strong IT skills, good communication, attention to detail, and enthusiasm for sport and fitness are essential. The successful candidate must be able to pass an enhanced DBS check and must be a competent swimmer. Desirable skills include First Aid at Work certification, knowledge of health and safety procedures, and experience in a leisure or sports environment. An outgoing, friendly manner and the ability to remain calm under pressure will be highly valued.
