Description
Role
The University of Leicester is seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to support a British Institute for Libyan and Northern African Studies (BILNAS)-funded project entitled ‘Agricultural Landscapes of the Nemencha, Algeria’. This interdisciplinary archaeological research project will explore settlement patterns, agricultural production, and environmental dynamics in the Nemencha region of east-central Algeria, corresponding to ancient southern Numidia during the Roman period (1st to 7th centuries CE). This area has received limited modern archaeological attention, and the project aims to rectify this by using advanced remote sensing techniques to record, map, and analyse the ancient landscape.
The successful applicant will join the School of Archaeology and Ancient History, a vibrant academic environment at the University of Leicester known for its world-leading research and commitment to inclusive and impactful scholarship. The postholder will work under the supervision of Dr N. Sheldrick and collaborate with an international research team, including colleagues from Tufts University, USA, led by Professor Bruce Hitchner. The role is also linked to the Endangered Archaeology in the Middle East and North Africa (EAMENA) initiative. Two part-time positions (0.2 FTE) are available, although a single appointment at 0.4 FTE may be considered, depending on the experience and availability of candidates.
Duties and responsibilities
The Research Assistant will contribute to the project by working with high-resolution satellite imagery to identify, digitise, and interpret archaeological features across the Nemencha landscape. This will involve using GIS software to conduct spatial analysis and map visible archaeological remains. The postholder will also consult historical maps and sources relevant to the region, perform condition assessments of sites, and contribute to the refinement of research methods. As a member of the research team, the assistant will be expected to summarise findings and communicate these with project partners both at the University of Leicester and abroad.
Where appropriate, the post holder may also support dissemination efforts, such as contributing to academic publications, presenting at conferences, or preparing content for digital platforms and social media. The role includes opportunities for professional development, particularly in archaeological remote sensing and GIS, in line with the University’s values of inclusivity, inspiration, and impact. The position will primarily be based on campus in Leicester, with regular communication and coordination with the wider international team.
Skills and experience
Applicants should hold an Honours degree or higher in Archaeology, GIS, or a closely related discipline. They must have experience with GIS software, such as ArcGIS Pro or QGIS, and/or with satellite imagery remote sensing techniques. Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as a clear enthusiasm for archaeological research and a willingness to further develop expertise in GIS and remote sensing. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential, along with the ability to organise tasks and work effectively within agreed schedules. A collaborative approach and commitment to supporting the wider research group is also important.
While not essential, preference may be given to candidates currently undertaking postgraduate study (MA or PhD) in a relevant subject area. Knowledge of Roman or North African archaeology and the ability to read French would be considered advantageous.
