Role

The University of Edinburgh is currently offering a part-time opportunity for 3 students to join the Information Services Facilities Team as an IS Facilities Assistant. The team is responsible for ensuring the availability of all the facilities/services necessary for the smooth operation of the Information Services Group (including all university libraries). Within this role, you will work in the Main Library to complete a range of security and customer-based activities.

This is an exciting opportunity for you to gain experience in customer service and communication, alongside a range of other transferable skills.

You can expect to start work on the 19th July 2025 and work until June 2026, whilst working 9 hours per week on either a Saturday or Sunday (8am - 5pm), based in the Main Library. During this position, you will be paid £12.60 per hour, plus £2.28 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your first payment date (should this position start when expected) will be the 28th August 2025.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Providing a security presence at the front desk: monitoring users entering and leaving the Library and ensuring Library policies are adhered to, whilst liaising with University Security in the event of any incidents;
  • Responding to everyday inquiries, such as the location of rooms, whilst performing occasional reception duties;
  • Erecting and dismantling shelving, organising frames for notices, moving books, furniture and other equipment as required;
  • Opening the Main Library in the morning and occasionally clearing and closing the Main Library building at night;
  • Undertaking regular monitoring of floors to ensure the safety and well-being of building users, and completing floor headcounts.

Skills and experience

Essential criteria:

  • A current University of Edinburgh student (this post is designated for UoE student employment; therefore, you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). You also must not hold the position of ‘Resident Assistant’;
  • Based in the UK for the duration of the work, able to work on campus when required (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications), and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person if needed;
  • Experience in frontline public and customer service in a busy and demanding environment;
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively, and with sensitivity and care where required, on both a written and verbal basis;
  • Demonstrable ability to multi-task, take on new activities, and help other team members whilst following instructions and procedures;
  • Proven self-motivation and team-working skills;
  • Evidence of manual handling skills.
Desirable Criteria:
  • Awareness of Health & Safety and its application to the work environment;
  • Knowledge of building security and safety procedures;
  • Awareness of appropriate book handling procedures;
  • Knowledge of stock control and store handling procedures;
  • Proven basic IT skills (e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.).
