Description
Role
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Research Associate to support the ongoing development of the Paediatric Intensive Care Audit Network (PICANet), an internationally recognised audit project led jointly by the Universities of Leicester and Leeds. This exciting position involves expanding our existing data infrastructure to capture and analyse information about staffing levels within paediatric intensive care units across the UK and Ireland. This is a key opportunity to contribute to impactful health research that supports improvements in critical care services for children. The role offers a flexible, hybrid working arrangement, with time split between home and the University’s modern George Davies Centre.
Duties and responsibilities
In this role, you will lead the design and delivery of a new reporting framework for paediatric intensive care staffing data. Your responsibilities will include securing necessary approvals for the study, developing a robust and secure data capture system, and creating an analysis plan and associated statistical code for use in future audits. You will also prepare communications and template reports to engage paediatric intensive care units and contribute to the overall visibility of PICANet through national meetings and collaborative networking.
You will collaborate closely with teams at both the University of Leicester and University of Leeds, and will engage with external partners and stakeholders in the field. Your contributions will help advance the PICANet mission of producing high-impact data to improve clinical outcomes in paediatric intensive care. In addition, you will support the professional development of junior colleagues and actively participate in knowledge exchange and dissemination activities.
Skills and experience
To be successful in this role, you will hold a PhD (or equivalent professional qualification and experience) in a relevant discipline, such as medical statistics or a field with strong quantitative elements. You should have demonstrable experience contributing to peer-reviewed publications or producing technical reports. Proficiency in data collection and statistical analysis software—ideally Stata—is essential, as is the ability to produce high-quality tables and visualisations that clearly communicate complex scientific findings.
We are looking for an excellent communicator with the ability to work both independently and as part of a research team. You will show evidence of continued subject expertise development and possess a commitment to professional growth and knowledge sharing. Your approach should align with the University’s values: being inclusive, inspiring and impactful.
