Role
We are looking to hire experienced performers and communicators who are current students of the University of Surrey and who can bring their enthusiasm and experience of teaching and performance to support participants in this year’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition at Surrey.
Following the initial judging stage, six 3MT finalists will be selected and each will receive up to 2 hours of one-to-one coaching from a trained performer-researcher. The coaching is aimed at supporting the 3MT finalists to build their confidence, clarity and authority as they deliver their final presentation
If you have the energy and experience to work one-to-one with our winning participants we would be delighted to hear from you. This role will involve building confidence and helping participants construct a winning narrative. As well as supporting researchers the aim is to provide a valuable opportunity to develop and demonstrate professional performance coaching and mentoring skills. Preference may be given to those available to coach in person, depending on the finalists.
An hourly rate of £16.46 plus additional £1.99 per hour in holiday pay.
Coaches will need to be available to provide two hours of one-to-one coaching between 2 and 16 June 2025

Duties and responsibilities
We are looking to hire coaches for 3 hours (2 hours coaching + 1 hour preparation time) per 3MT finalist (total of 3x6=18 hours). Depending on recruitment it may be that coaches will be asked to work with multiple finalists.
Skills and experience
We are looking for people with the following, skills, knowledge and experience:
• Great people skills, nurturing creativity for an activity many people find stressful – public speaking.
• Experience of coaching, mentoring or teaching, including confidence in providing feedback to a diverse range of people.
• Performance or public speaking expertise and the ability to inspire others to communicate with impact.
• Sensitivity to issues of equality, diversity and inclusion and experienced at building trust and respect
• Good time management and planning skills, able to work independently to meet a tight deadline.
• Preference will be given to current University of Surrey Postgraduate Researchers. Please note that if you are appointed to this role, you will not be eligible to enter the 3MT competition.
