Role
The successful applicants will support data collection and analysis within research projects based in the Biostatistics and TIMMS Research Groups in the Department of Population Health Sciences. During this internship you will develop your statistical skills, learn new research techniques and statistical software packages, and understand how to better involve the general public in research through Patient and Public Involvement (PPI).
Working hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday-Friday

Duties and responsibilities
3-week group project:
•Work collaboratively with fellow interns to evaluate the uptake of PPI in systematic reviews and identify common methods for including PPI
•Perform a scoping review of systematic reviews in a journal where a PPI statement is mandatory
5-week individual project on one of the following topics:
•Project 1 – Health technology assessments of rare diseases: This project will analyse sources of uncertainty in a probabilistic sensitivity analysis of a rare disease health technology assessment. A case study of Duchenne muscular dystrophy will be used and analysis conducted using statistical software (R/Stata).
•Project 2 – This project entails a living systematic review of regional anaesthesia for reducing the incidence and severity of chronic pain after surgery. The project will investigate innovative methods for communicating the results to patients and the public, such as interactive dashboards and/or data visualisations.
•Project 3 – This project will be a scoping review to compare trial methodologies in neonatal and paediatric intensive care, with focus on the methodology used for outcomes. The project will involve attending Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) meetings to shape the project direction and interpretation of results.
Interns will have the opportunity to attend the Young Statisticians’ Meeting on Thursday 3rd July 2025 in Liverpool where they can meet other early career researchers and present their findings from the group project. Furthermore, the interns will have various opportunities to network with colleagues across the department, exposing them to different areas of research and talk to other recent graduates.
Skills and experience
Essential
•Must be enrolled on second/third year of a relevant degree level programme in the UK. Whilst mathematics, statistics or data science are preferred subjects, other relevant subjects include: economics, computing, physics, biomedical sciences, medical biochemistry, psychology, medicine, and other undergraduate healthcare degrees which involve basic training in research and statistics *
•Basic knowledge of statistical concepts *
•High level of proficiency in English, sufficient to undertake research and administrative activities using English Language materials and to communicate effectively with staff *
•Experience with relevant office packages including document processing packages such as MS Word and spreadsheet software such as MS Excel *
Desirable
•Experience with more advanced word processing packages such as Latex, and statistical packages such as R or Stata) *
•Organisation skills and familiarity with using calendars such as Outlook and online meeting packages such as MS Teams
•Experience and knowledge of applying research skills and techniques to deliver outputs on time and to the required quality.
•Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
•Ability to work as part of a team
•Self-motivated and ability to meet deadlines

In addition to the salary, up to £1,000 is available towards the cost of travel and accommodation if applicants are not living locally to the University of Leicester.
