Are you a current student at Teesside University?

Are you passionate about sport and your experience at university?

Would you like the chance to work in sport and help contribute to an outstanding sport and physical activity experience and helping students and staff to become more physically active at university?

We are recruiting several positions at Teesside Sport for students to assist with sports facility and sports services operations. You will provide a face-face support service in Olympia making an active contribution to Teesside Sport.

We would like you to have customer service experience, an interest in working in sport, a good team player, also able to work as an individual, the ability to solve problems in a very fasted pace dynamic environment and have good communication skills. To apply for these roles, you must be a student registered on a course lasting at least one academic year at Teesside and be 60+ credits. For some of the sports roles you will also need to have the correct qualifications to be able to apply for those roles.

Duties and responsibilities

  • To supervise all users in the Climbing and Bouldering Wall areas.
  • To carry out induction, introductory and group sessions.
  • To advise on climbing movement techniques in specific workshops.
  • To ensure all equipment and fixings are checked regularly and are safe to use.
  • To ensure the required standards of cleanliness and tidiness are always maintained, filling in appropriate check sheets.
  • To ensure that the environment is welcoming and safe from potential hazards and all literature is presentable and kept up to date.
  • To promote the other facilities available through the Gym Membership scheme and any subsidiary activities associated with Climbing, and Outdoor Activities.
  • Adhere to the University’s Health and Safety Policy and guidelines.
  • Adhere to the General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018.
  • Promote Equality, Diversity and Inclusion for staff and students and embrace the University’s Values and Behaviours Framework.
  • To undertake any other reasonable duties that may be allocated from time to time commensurate with the grading of the post.

Skills and experience

  • Ability to convey straightforward information in a clear and accurate manner both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to communicate information which needs careful explanation with tact and diplomacy, taking action to correct misunderstandings.
  • Ability to relate and communicate well to a diverse range of staff and students.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, supporting colleagues in need of additional help.
  • Experience in dealing with internal and external customers, being responsive to requests and dealing with routine enquiries.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to conduct climbing wall inductions following safety guidelines.
  • Ability to complete tasks and prioritise work within a given framework.
  • Ability to solve standard problems in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Ability to evaluate services and contribute to service improvement initiatives.
  • Working knowledge of the operation of a indoor climbing wall.
  • Experience of working in a climbing wall.
  • Customer service experience.
  • Registered student at Teesside University during Academic Year 2024/2025 studying a minimum of 60 credits.
  • Climbing Wall Instructor Qualification.
  • First Aid Certificate.
  • Willing to undertake further training associated with the role.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the University’s Vision, Mission and Values and to work within university policies and procedures.
