THE ROLE 

The department of Disability, Mental Health and Wellbeing/Library and Student at De Montfort University are looking to recruit a Transitions and Retention Officer, the role is part time for 21 hours per week and post is until the end of February 2025. 

Overall purpose of the role 

To work in Student Welfare, as a member of the Transition and Retention Team. 

To provide support to disabled applicants and current students at DMU giving information, advice and guidance, making referrals to other University Departments and to external agencies where necessary including specialist staff within Student Welfare.  

We are looking for a candidate who has awareness and understanding of the Disabled Students' Allowances, recent experience of working with disabled people and experience of presenting to large groups as well as one to one. 

Expected start date: 6/5/2025 

Expected end date: end of Feb 2025.

Expected interview date: 10th and/or 12th June 

Rate of pay: £16.39

Holiday Pay: £2.57

The role is not suitable for students due to the nature of it and managing sensitive and confidential information. The role is of a hybrid nature but staff will need to ensure they can commit to coming on campus on certain days weekly. 

Duties and responsibilities

Promoting services for transition into university for disabled applicants. 

To work across all faculties to support applicants to transition into University with Student Support Meetings. 

To ensure that eligible students access funding via Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA) and where appropriate to support them in their application. 

To refer students to other University departments where necessary, including DMU’s Wellbeing Team, Accommodation Office, Security (DELTA referrals), Health and Safety (PEEPs), appropriate Faculty colleagues etc. 

To undertake individual case work and to maintain applicant records using confidential databases, including regular reporting to managers to monitor applicant and conversion data. 

Development and delivery of DMU Summer Schools, including presentations to disabled applicants, including New to DMU for Autistic students as well as other other induction programmes e.g., College events.  

To liaise with departments involved in supporting access to the HE environment, such as Social Services, Disabled Students Allowance applications, including Assessment Centres and student funding providers.  

To offer 1:1 appointments to current students to continue support in enabling access to HE and DSA’s. 

Develop and maintain currency of skills and knowledge by participating in appropriate learning, development and networking activities. 

Must be able to support with university Open Days as required.  

This role is hybrid and will require on campus and remote working.  

Perform any other duties commensurate with the job grade as reasonably required from time to time.

Skills and experience

Qualifications

Degree, equivalent level qualification or relevant experience with the role - Desirable  

Specialist disability qualifications, such as the National Autistic Society online modules - Desirable 

Skills, Knowledge and Experience 

Awareness and understanding of the Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA). This will include the responsibility for ensuring that all students who are eligible for the DSA’s are supported through the process to ensure receipt - Essential

Recent experience of working with disabled people, inc. those with physical and sensory impairments, mental health conditions, medical conditions, Autism Spectrum Conditions, ADHD and SPLD in the HE environment - Essential 

Demonstrable knowledge of the barriers faced by disabled students in HE - Essential 

Experience of presenting to large groups of people as well as one to one - Essential 

Able to produce a wide range of professional documents including letters, emails and reports in accessible formats - Essential 

Excellent customer service skills - Essential 

The ability to work as part of a team as well as independently - Essential   

Understanding and knowledge of specialised assistive technology and software such as mind mapping, text to speech and Brain in Hand - Desirable 

Understand confidentiality and the requirements of the GDPR - Essential 

Working knowledge of confidential data management and client management systems such as CRM, SLCM or C4C - Essential 

Understanding safeguarding and risk management within HE and when to make appropriate referrals - Essential
