Role
About the role:
This is a 12-week internship opportunity with Wastewater Fuels as part of the WMG Internship Program
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team at Wastewater Fuels. The internship is based at WasteWater Fuels in Coventry. You will be working closely with WMG gaining first-hand experience with an industrial business, as well as with WMG technical teams. You will also benefit from weekly supervision and support by a WMG expert, throughout the duration of the project.
Wastewater fuels Ltd. is a startup business developing a new generation of green electrolysers using microbial fuel cell technology. Our systems consume organic compounds found in wastewater and convert this into hydrogen, this process requires much less electrical energy input than a conventional electrolyser because the chemical energy of the organic content of the wastewater fuels the process. In order to optimise the operation of the cell the company wants to investigate the optimisation of the water flow through its current cell design, identify potential alternative configurations to increase the flow rate through the cell configuration without compromising the microbiological activities of the bug colonies within the existing design. The role will involve calculations to characterise the existing fluid flow conditions and then proposing modifications with supporting calculations to increase the fluid flow rates while managing the solids carry over to ensure minimal choking of the cell foams containing the bug colonies. The company have engineers who will support and assist with the activities, but they are unable to commit full time to the activity due to other work pressures, the successful candidate will be expected to drive the activity while being supported by the existing work force.
Duties and responsibilities
The project objectives:
- Establish the fluid flow characteristics through the current prototype cell configuration and with the company design team review potential alternatives to increase/improve the fluid flow through alternative designs without compromising the microbiological conditions that provide optimal microbiological activity for the bug colonies to remove the contaminant waste from the water being treated.
- Work with the engineers in the company to construct an alternative prototype cell incorporating the proposed design changes and establish that the alternative design provides the physical changes the calculations indicate should have occurred.
Skills and experience
Essential:
- Chemical Engineering/Process Engineering background, with a minimum qualification level of a masters degree- Industrial or practical project experience required
- An understanding and appreciation of fluid flow characteristics.
- Good verbal and written communication, time management and organisational skills
- Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines
