Role
The Student Welcome and Induction Team are recruiting a Student Welcome and Induction Assistant (Transition) to play a key role in delivering UCL’s Transition Mentor Programme and supporting wider Welcome and Induction activities for new students.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a large-scale student support initiative that helps over 8,000 first-year undergraduates settle into university life through peer mentoring, structured induction activities, and on-campus welcome events. This role sits within the Student Welcome and Induction team in Education Services and reports to the Senior Student Welcome and Induction Officer (Transition).
It will involve managing key aspects of the Transition Mentor Programme while also providing on-campus support for the main Welcome period at both Bloomsbury and UCL East campuses.
Duties and responsibilities
The postholder will be responsible for managing the Transition Programme inbox, responding to queries from mentors, mentees, and staff, and ensuring that all first-year students are assigned a mentor.
They will coordinate with departments to ensure that each new student attends a Meet Your Mentor session in Welcome Week and will oversee the recruitment, onboarding, and training of Transition and Senior Mentors.
Keeping detailed records and monitoring engagement throughout the programme will also be key, through Excel record tracking, emails, phone calls and using Microsoft Office and the postholder will work closely with the Senior Welcome and Induction Officer to ensure the programme runs smoothly and students receive a high-quality peer support experience. Alongside supporting the Transition Mentor Programme, the role will also involve working with the wider Welcome and Induction team to support UCL’s on-campus Welcome and Induction activities primarily at Bloomsbury but also UCL East.
This will include helping coordinate Welcome Ambassadors, help desks and ID card collection points.
The postholder will also provide logistical support for the main welcome events and talks run by the Student Welcome & Induction Team.

Skills and experience
You will require strong administrative experience with excellent IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams) and the ability to learn new IT skills quickly. You will be highly organised, capable of managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines, with strong attention to detail and accuracy, particularly in data management using Excel. Your clear and professional communication skills will enable you to engage effectively with a range of stakeholders. You will work well both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative when needed. With a high level of professionalism and discretion, you will be sensitive to diverse student populations. You will be proactive in planning, able to identify and address potential issues, and ensure tasks are completed efficiently while seeking support when required.

This role will be full-time, from Thursday 29 May until 28 November 2025. The pay for this role is Grade 5, Spine point 16 (£16.53 per hour + £3.09 holiday pay).This role follows UCL’s hybrid working policy, with a minimum of one day per week (Thursday) at Bidborough House, outside of peak Welcome periods. During the main Welcome period (September-October, including the weekend of 20–21 September), the postholder will be required to work on campus full-time, normally from 8am-6pm to support key Welcome and Induction activities.
