Role
Unitemps are recruiting for a Research Impact Officer (Brain Sciences). This role is suitable for UCL Students and UCL Graduates Only. This is a part-time role at 18.75 hours per week. This role is for a May 6th start date and has a projected end date of July 31st 2025. Payment is set at £20.29 per hour + holiday pay. This role will hybrid working with part from home and ad hoc when needed from the office.
UCL’s Faculty of Brain Sciences is recruiting a Research Impact Officer to provide support for identifying and evidencing research impact case studies for submission to future national research assessment exercises. The role will focus on Research Excellence Framework 2029 (REF2029) preparations in the fields of Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience (REF Unit of Assessment 04).
Context
The Research Excellence Framework defines research impact as “the effect on, change or benefit to the economy, society, culture, public policy or services, health, the environment or quality of life beyond academia. UCL submits impact case studies to the REF to demonstrate how research conducted at our institution has led to impact – including but not limited to policy change, patient outcomes, environmental impact, improved cultural or public understanding, spinouts and commercial revenue.
Duties and responsibilities
- Work closely with the RIGE Impact team and the FBS Vice-Dean for Research to establish an effective strategy for identifying impact case studies and collecting all necessary information
- Review impact case studies submitted in REF2021 and assess for continuing impact
- Identify missing, incomplete or unresolved evidence of impact in case studies and identify case study authors needing priority support for evidence collection
- Establish evidence collection strategies for potential impact case studies
- Accurately develop and maintain records to monitor and track impact case studies and any developments throughout the term of the role
- Support and encourage a culture of impact literacy across the Faculty of Brain Sciences
- Develop knowledge and expertise in REF2029 – keeping up to date with decisions and guidance as announced and communicating with colleagues
- Support the arrangement and delivery of impact workshops and meetings – providing impact-related administrative support to the FBS Vice-Dean for Research as necessary
Skills and experience
- Undergraduate degree in a life sciences subject
- Experience of research in life sciences• Ability to and experience of understanding novel concepts quickly
- Experience of recording, interpreting and analysing data
- Demonstratable familiarity of at least one type or pathway to research impact; for example knowledge exchange, public policy, cultural, commercialisation, public engagement
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to liaise effectively with colleagues at all levels of seniority
- Excellent time management and organisational skills
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
- Excellent record keeping ability and attention to detail
Desirable
- Postgraduate degree or current doctoral student in a life sciences subject
- Knowledge of the Research Excellence Framework and experience of developing evaluation strategies for engagement and impact activities
- Primary research experience, such as interviewing or surveying
*The Research Impact Officer role would suit a PhD student or postdoctoral researcher looking to gain more experience and increase their understanding of research impact and processes for measuring research excellence in higher education institutes.
