Role
We are seeking a motivated individual to join our dynamic Sport & Active Life team as a Sports Assistant. This is a customer-facing position where you will play a key role in delivering outstanding service within our Sports Centre and associated facilities. You will contribute to the smooth running of the day-to-day operations, supporting a vibrant and inclusive environment that encourages participation, wellbeing, and community engagement.
This position offers an exciting opportunity to work in a friendly and collaborative team, where your contribution helps to enhance the sporting experience for students, staff, alumni and members of the public.
Duties and responsibilities
As a Sports Assistant, you will be involved in a range of tasks, including setting up and maintaining both indoor and outdoor sports facilities for use by students, sports clubs, and external visitors. Your responsibilities will include greeting and assisting users, managing access, taking bookings, and ensuring that our high standards of cleanliness and presentation are met across all areas.
You will implement our Health and Safety procedures, carry out regular pool and spa water tests, and act as a first responder in case of emergencies. You will also be responsible for financial transactions including membership fees and court bookings, keeping accurate records in line with operational procedures.
Additionally, you will contribute to the organisation of sports fixtures, competitions, and events, supporting the Centre’s efforts to broaden its sporting offer. Flexibility is key, as some duties may require lone working and short periods outdoors, as well as securing the premises at the end of the day.
Skills and experience
The successful candidate will have previous experience in a customer service and/or leisure environment, be IT literate, and demonstrate a keen interest in sport and fitness. Accuracy, good communication skills, and a strong customer-focused approach are essential.
It is desirable for applicants to have a working knowledge of health and safety procedures, a First Aid at Work qualification, and an STA NaRS Pool Attendant certificate. You should be able to swim and be comfortable working poolside.
We are looking for individuals who are flexible, approachable, and calm under pressure, with the ability to multi-task and deliver a high standard of service. A good telephone manner, strong personal presentation, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team will be key to your success in this role.
