Description

Role

The Student Welcome and Induction Team are recruiting Transition Mentors across all undergraduate programmes at UCL!

About the programme

The Transition Mentor Programme supports all first-year undergraduate students in their transition to university in Term One. This transition can be a particularly stressful time for students as they adapt to a different way of life and new academic demands.

Transition Mentors provide peer support to a group of approximately 10 first year students in their department/degree programme through regular in-person group mentoring meetings and communication.

This is an excellent opportunity for students to develop leadership, interpersonal and organisation skills. Transition Mentors will be supported by a Senior Mentor and trained by the Transition Team to undertake their duties.

Duties and responsibilities

Please view the Job Description & Person Specification and website for full information about the role: Job Description: here.

Working Arrangements

Transition Mentors are paid on Grade 3, Spinal Point 8 (£14.64 per hour via UCL Unitemps, plus £2.74 holiday pay) for a maximum of 16 hours of work (including training). Please see the job description for a full breakdown of payment.

Skills and experience

Applicants must be UCL undergraduate students who will be studying at UCL in September 2025, and available for a flexible one-hour weekly mentoring on campus from 22 September to 21 November 2025. Training will take place online in the first two weeks of September.

We're looking for organised, reliable individuals with strong communication and interpersonal skills who can provide a welcoming and supportive environment for first-year students. Familiarity with UCL and the ability to signpost support services is important. Previous involvement in UCL societies or relevant work/volunteering experience is desirable but not required.

Applicants must be available for the full duration of the programme and based in London with access to campus (this may be Bloomsbury, UCL East or Canary Wharf, depending on where your programme is based). Students on study abroad or industrial placements in September 2025, affiliate students and postgraduate students are not eligible for the Transition Mentor role.
