Role
The Student Success and Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (SSEDI), in collaboration with the Students’ Union, are creating a new extra-curricular programme, called Surrey Future Leaders, for our under-represented student groups throughout their university experience, from starting at the University of Surrey to graduation.

 
This exciting opportunity will involve the post holder in developing a community network and designing/creating events and resources for their peers. As a Student Network Champion, you will enable and facilitate members of our Care Experienced and Estranged student community to come together and share experiences, attend bespoke events and workshops and get timely advice or opportunities specific to their situation and/or circumstance.
 
You will also obtain an insight into project management and design work which will enhance your CV. Training and CPD opportunities are available.
 
Hours: 3 hours per week* for 12 months from Monday 9 June 2025 until Sunday 7 June 2026.  
 
*Flexible working hours. 3 hours based on expected average weekly commitment. 

 

£12.21 per hour.

£1.47 per hour holiday pay.

This job opportunity is open to home students enrolled at the University of Surrey who identify as belonging to one of the following student groups:

Care Experienced, this includes:

Care leavers (young people aged 16-25 years old who have been in care at some point since they were 14 years old and were in care on or after their sixteenth birthday)

If you were in formal or informal kinship care

Have been in foster care or adopted

Estranged from your biological or adoptive parents

 

 

Duties and responsibilities
We’re looking for individuals who are representative of the Care Experienced and Estranged community across the University of Surrey to work with the SSEDI team on the Surrey Future Leaders programme, ensuring that student voice is at the heart of what we do.

 
Duties can include, but are not limited to: - 
 
Attending scheduled workshops and meetings with the SSEDI Team and other Student Network Champions 
 
Contributing to the marketing of the programme, promoting the network across the University to increase membership and engagement
 
Collating and presenting student feedback to SSEDI Team
 
Creating a calendar of activities for community network members to attend
 
Responsible for a small budget to create social events in collaboration with the SSEDI 
 
Leading the network on any projects from the wider university and Students’ Union 
 
Attending meetings with university staff

Essential

Enrolled as a University of Surrey Home student  

 

Experience with group facilitation  

 

Experience with event planning 

 

Ability to work independently with some supervision  

 

Demonstrate empathy, leadership and initiative skills  

 

Feel comfortable sharing feedback and ideas in a group setting with staff and fellow students 

 

Experience of managing a budget 

 

Lived experience and/or understanding of the experiences of students from underrepresented groups at Surrey 

 

Experience of evaluating activities/events to improve future initiatives 

 

Good organisational skills with the ability to multi-task and prioritise own workload  

 

Commitment to leading the network for a year 

 

Ability to work effectively as a team
