Unitemps are recruiting for a Research Co-ordination Assistant (Environmental Sustainability). This role is suitable for UCL Graduates only. This is a part-time role at 14 hours per week. This role is for a May 12th start date and has a projected end date of June 20th 2025. Payment is set at £18.88 per hour + holiday pay. The Environment Domain is a pan UCL network connecting and championing cross disciplinary expertise in environmental research. Situated within UCL’s Research Co-ordination Office, the Domain’s remit includes supporting colleagues to identify research funding opportunities and develop strong research proposals. We are living in a period of unprecedented environmental change, where meaningful actions around environmental sustainability, the climate crisis and net zero are needed. The UK Research and Innovation (R&I) sector is well placed to lead the way in making R&I itself environmentally sustainable, alongside providing the R&I needed to help other sectors and wider society make this much needed transition.

This has led the community to co-develop a voluntary Environmental Sustainability Concordat, capturing this shared ambition for the UK to continue delivering cutting-edge research, but in a more environmentally responsible and sustainable way. UCL is a signatory of this Concordat. As a result of this, we are seeing environmental sustainability being much more prevalent in the grant funding space – this ranges from funder statements on sustainability, to sustainability being specifically incorporated into bid assessment processes. However, at present there is no uniform application of this, with the environmental sustainability ask varying between funders and between funding calls.

The role of the Research Co-ordination Assistant (Environmental Sustainability) offers an excellent opportunity for a post graduate researcher with a passion for sustainability and the environment, and knowledge of UK Research and Innovation, to play a critical role in scoping out the funding landscape with regards to sustainability and research grants. This is a fixed term role of 14 hours per week for 6 weeks commencing around the W/C 12 May until around W/C 23 June (some flexibility on these dates is available). The role is hybrid, with one day in the office every 2 weeks. The hours can be worked over 2 – 3 weekdays to suit the successful applicant.

  • Liaise with research co-ordination teams, research managers and Sustainable UCL around the needs of the research support community.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering Faculty around an example of researcher/ faculty needs linked to incorporating sustainability in research proposals. Where time allows, this can be extended to other faculties.
