Role

Unitemps are recruiting for a Impact Officer for the Biosciences department. This role is suitable for UCL Students or UCL Graduates only. This is a part-time role at 13 hours per week. This role is for April 23rd start date and has a projected end date of until July 31st 2025. Payment is set at £20.29 per hour + holiday pay. This role will hybrid working.

The Research Excellence Framework defines research impact as “the effect on, change or benefit to the economy, society, culture, public policy or services, health, the environment or quality of life beyond academia. UCL submits impact case studies to the REF to demonstrate how research conducted at our institution has led to impact – including but not limited to environmental impact, improved cultural or public understanding, policy change, patient outcomes, spinouts and commercial revenue.

Duties and responsibilities

UCL’s Faculty of Life Sciences and the RIGE Impact Team are recruiting a Research Impact Officer to provide support for identifying and evidencing research impact case studies for submission to future national research assessment exercises. 
 
The role will focus on Research Excellence Framework 2029 (REF2029) preparations in the field of Biological Sciences (REF Unit of Assessment 05). 
 
The role can be worked hybrid, with some travel to Bloomsbury campus expected for Ad hoc meetings.

Skills and experience

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the RIGE Impact team and the UoA05 REF Academic Lead to establish an effective strategy for identifying impact case studies and collecting all necessary information
  • Review ongoing impact case studies submitted in REF2021
  • Identify missing, incomplete or unresolved evidence of impact in case studies and identify case study authors needing priority support for evidence collection
  • Accurately develop and maintain records to monitor and track impact case studies and any developments throughout the term of the role
  • Support and encourage a culture of impact literacy across relevant divisions
  • Develop knowledge and expertise in REF2029 – keeping up to date with decisions and guidance as announced and communicating with colleagues
  • Support the arrangement and delivery of impact workshops and meetings – providing impact-related administrative support to the UoA05 REF Academic Lead as necessary

Skills and experience

Essential

  • Undergraduate degree in a life sciences subject
  • Experience of research in life sciences
  • Ability to and experience of understanding novel concepts quickly
  • Experience of recording, interpreting and analysing data
  • Demonstrable familiarity of at least one type or pathway to research impact; for example knowledge exchange, public policy, cultural, commercialisation, public engagement
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to liaise effectively with colleagues at all levels of seniority
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Excellent record keeping ability and attention to detail

Desirable

  • Postgraduate degree or current doctoral student in a life sciences subject
  • Knowledge of the Research Excellence Framework and experience of developing evaluation strategies for engagement and impact activities
  • Primary research experience, such as interviewing or surveying

The Research Impact Officer role would suit a PhD student looking to gain experience in research impact and management.

UCL; hybrid working with part from home and part from the Bloomsbury campus
