The Research Assistant Civic Investment will be working on a national project to explore the role of civic investment in place-based renewal. They will work on exploring the range of municipal bonds in operation across the world, and then to identify the key barriers and enablers of successful civic investment initiatives.

The research assistant will analyse and synthesise data from various sources to identify policy-relevant enablers and barriers to community investments, and support development of toolkits for scaleable actions. They will support the development of a national board for civic investment, working alongside the Connected Communities Catapult.

The research assistant will also explore the conceptual framework of ‘smart commons’, and support the development of a working model of smart commons within a civic investment framework.

The role will start around 14/04/2025 until 28/11/25 - there will be 250 hours in total for this assignment.

Duties and responsibilities

1. Conduct a literature review on different civic investment approaches.

2. Support the development of qualitative interviews with existing international schemes.

3. Apply Qualitative Analysis methods, such as Thematic and Narrative Analysis, to identify key trends and to generate meaningful narratives showcasing civic investment practices and benefits.

4. Identify key barriers and enablers to civic investment, outlining impact strengths and relevant policymaking approaches.

5. Develop a toolkit for wider awareness-raising of civic investment, and for use by different audiences. Work with designers to deliver a relevant toolkit.

6. Contribute to development of academic papers, outlining the relevance of civic investment in place-based renewal.

Skills and experience
Postgraduate degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field (e.g., finance, public policy, social sciences, research methods)

 
Substantial experience in research, data analysis, or related fields
 
Expertise in qualitative data capture and analysis, including surveys, thematic and narrative analysis
 
Proven ability to synthesize complex qualitative information and derive meaningful insights
 
Understanding of community finance initiatives, including municipal bonds, alternative economies, civic investment.
 
Experience in facilitating interactions and collaborations between researchers and community projects.
 
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas to diverse audiences
 
Commitment to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of work
