Description
Role
***ringfenced to current postgraduate LJMU students and recent postgraduates****
Research Assistant for Rural Artist-Led Housing research project.
'Rural Artist-Led Housing' is a collaboration between LJMU (School of Art and Design) and Peak Cymru, an arts charity based in Black Mountains, south Wales. Peak creates time, space and resources for young people, artists, curators, multidisciplinary practitioners, and intergenerational communities to make, experiment and collaborate. This project is to undertake research to enable Peak to expand their support into the provision of housing for the creatives they work with.
An ability to sustain a creative rural life is impacted by issues of housing affordability, availability and design. Peak are one of several UK arts organisations currently looking to provide housing to extend existing infrastructures of support for creatives.
The project builds on a body of work already undertaken by Dr Jonathan Orlek (project PI) into the role of arts and artist-led organisations within the provision of housing, which to date has focussed primarily on urban contexts. Through an analysis of alternative housing designs and models across a range of geographic contexts (urban and rural; Wales- and UK/Europe-based) and organisational structures (artist-led and community-led), 'Rural Artist-Led Housing' will explore the different creative roles that Peak could play within the provision of housing.
Duties and responsibilities
Guided and supported by Dr Jonathan Orlek, the primary duty of the Research Assistant (RA) will be the production of architectural diagrams, housing typology drawings, and organisational diagrams related to artist-led housing. The RA will be required to create architectural designs in response to the opportunities and limitations of different types of site as well as different types of organisational/funding structure. This design-research will inform a feasibility/options appraisal process for Peak.
The Research Assistant can use the allotted hours (45 hours total) flexibly over an agreed period. The overall deadline for completion of the work is 27 June 2025. Specific milestones will be agreed with the PI. Some aspects of the role can be undertaken from home, if desired. Face-to-face progress meetings are required. Meetings with Peak are expected to be conducted online and during a visit to Liverpool in June.
For graduating LSAD students who would like to apply, it is envisaged that the work will be undertaken after the School of Art and Design Degree Show opens to avoid this RA job interfering with the completion and submission of final projects.
Skills and experience
Essential
• Hold or working towards a Masters level degree in a relevant field.
• An ability to analyse and combine information from several precedent architectural projects and use this to produce original architectural diagrams and drawings. The role will require the production of quick consistent spatial diagrams as well as detailed typology drawings. (Please see note on portfolio submission below in relation to the evidencing of this.)
• Knowledge of UK housing regulations and/or ability to produce housing design work within a regulatory framework.
Desirable
• Experience working with artists and/or arts organisations or an interest in artistic practices, artist-led spaces, or cultural industries.
• An understanding of rural UK housing policy and/or community-led housing models and processes.
• Hold or working towards a PhD in a relevant field.
