Role
Warwick Medical School requires technical support to assist with implementing LabCup, the University’s new chemical inventory system. In particular this role will support the research groups within the Biomedical Sciences Directorate (BMS) with a core set of basic tasks including importing details for the stock of chemicals into the new database. This includes enriching existing data, new data entry, putting barcodes on containers, checking physical vs. book stock, correcting book to physical records and booking chemicals into LabCup locations.

Duties and responsibilities

Assist research groups to update their chemical inventory accurately using the LabCup system. This is including but not limited to:

  • Work within the lab to find and return items to correct locations
  • Enriching existing chemical inventory lists, e.g. adding brand and product code in accordance with the LabCup upload template format
  • Checking physical inventory to book inventory and investigating/rectifying discrepancies, e.g. add new items, delete missing items, duplicate or edit items including completing item and supplier details
  • Print labels, check details and stick labels on physical items
  • Add lists of bulk items via excel as required
  • Use a handheld scanner to upload items and check details of items against inventory records
  • Monitor and record progress made against a list of items or locations
  • Move stock into LabCup locations once they’re created on LabCup
  • Report issues or queries to a member of the technical staff team.

Skills and experience

  • Demonstrated experience operating within a biomedical sciences lab environment to include knowledge of chemicals and typical lab practices re storage of chemicals.  A good understanding of the COSHH regulations would be an advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow standard operating procedures for a biomedical sciences lab environment. 
  • Good IT skills and the ability to pick up the use of bespoke software. Previous experience with databases/information management systems will be an advantage.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of accuracy and with attention to detail.
  • Tact and discretion, and proven ability to work with confidential information. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  3. Occasionally may need to work in inhospitable environments (hot, cold, foul smells)
  4. Existing PhD students or workers should have the permission of their supervisor/line manager to undertake this work
