Role
The University of Edinburgh is currently offering a part-time opportunity for a student to join the Heritage Collections team as a Gallery Events Intern. Within this role, you will help deliver a summer public programme of activities and events, together with promotional material, to support the 2025 Main Library Exhibition Rooting: Ecology, Extraction and Environmental Emergency in the University’s Art Collections.

This is an exciting opportunity for you to gain experience in working with stakeholders to organise, promote and evaluate a cultural sector public programme, developing skills in events management and stakeholder engagement which will be useful for a future career working in universities, libraries or museums.

You can expect to start work on the 1st May and work until the 31st July, whilst working 15 hours per week based in the Main Library. During this position, you will be paid £12.67 per hour, plus £2.29 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your first payment date (should this position start when expected) will be the 27th June. 

Duties and responsibilities

  • Supporting in the planning, promotion, delivery and evaluation of activities and events (such as workshops, talks and tours) which support the exhibition;
  • Assisting with general gallery maintenance and checks;
  • Developing promotional content to use across various marketing channels to promote the exhibition and wider public programme;
  • Gathering visitor feedback through in-person surveys and feedback forms, and preparing event reports.

Skills and experience

Essential criteria:

  • A current University of Edinburgh Undergraduate, Postgraduate Taught, or Part-Time Postgraduate Research student (this post is designated for UoE student employment; therefore, you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). You also must not hold the position of ‘Resident Assistant’;
  • Based in the UK for the duration of the work, able to work on campus when required (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications), and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person if needed;
  • Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to respond to and incorporate feedback from stakeholders;
  • Proven strong time management and organisational skills, with an ability to meet deadlines;
  • Demonstrable attention to detail, with a creative approach to problem solving.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Proven experience or interest in heritage collections;
  • Demonstrable experience leading tours or workshops;
  • Evidence of an enthusiasm for working with art collections or social responsibility and sustainability.
