Description
Role
To undertake leaf sampling and extraction of DNA/RNA of plants grown from the UK Vegetable Genebank seed collection
Duties and responsibilities
- Assist in the selection of samples and liaising with horticultural staff to sow seed and raise young plants
- Undertake laboratory techniques including DNA / RNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, sampling of leaf material and plant management
- Set up, maintenance and data collection associated with laboratory and glasshouse activities within the project, ensuring data is recorded appropriately
- Providing updates on progress at research group meetings
- Liaise with commercial sequencing service providers, co-ordinating shipment of samples
- Assist with student projects as required
- Ensure compliance with health and safety in all aspects of work
- Purchasing equipment and consumables
- Dealing with equipment and maintenance issues.
- Monitoring project / experiment progress and advising PI of any issues
Skills and experience
- Honours degree in an appropriate biological science
- Demonstrable experience of nucleic acid extraction using a range of methods, as well as other relevant molecular techniques
- Demonstrable experience of handling large numbers of samples and keeping accurate records
- An understanding and practical experience of plant biology
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Good communication skills
