The internship position will assist the lawyers within Legal Services, City Law & Governance Directorate, the in-house legal team of Liverpool City Council. Our Service have specialist lawyers in the key areas of public sector law in the following teams: Adult Social Care & Litigation, Property & Regeneration, Commercial Law, Child Protection, Planning & Regulatory, and Legal Practice & Business. This internship position will be based within the Adult Social Care and Litigation Team who primarily deal with safeguarding, housing & homelessness, employment, education, civil litigation, and debt recovery.

Duties and responsibilities
Main duties will all be subject to appropriate supervision and will include:
• Drafting initial court applications (Court of Protection/ Family Court/ Employment Tribunal/County Court/ High Court).
• Draft documents to HM Land Registry.
• Brief counsel on non-complex matters.
• Draft Letters of Instruction / Guidance to experts and liaising therewith.
• Support counsel at hearings when required.
• Attend non-complex court hearings.
• Take instructions from Human Resource and Adult Social Care colleagues.
• Research case law.
• Attend round table meetings, advocacy meetings, client conferences and hearings
• Reading third party disclosure.
• Preparation of court bundles including liaison with parties in respect of agreeing documents to be omitted and administration of those hearings (especially telephone/ remote hearings).

Skills and experience
Knowledge of social care and health, and employment law is preferred but not essential. No specific qualifications or experience are required but the candidate should be:
• willing to learn
• able to communicate effectively, both orally and inwriting, with various professions and agencies, using standard Microsoft applications
• able to work under pressure and to meet guidelines
• able to take comprehensive and accurate notes of meetings and/or evidence at court
