This role is to provide a full technical support service to students and staff, including training, practical assistance and advice on the use of equipment and techniques.
We are looking for someone to have expert knowledge and experience relevant to the areas of responsibility, all technical support staff are expected to adopt a proactive role in keeping up-to-date with new developments as appropriate to their role. In addition they are also expected to understand the need to put students first and to be proactive in improving the support that students receive, which may include working with students in other facilities.
The role requires 22.2 hours per week (3 days), working on campus.

Duties and responsibilities
Interaction with Students and Staff
Instruction and SupportProvide both initial and ongoing instruction to students and staff on the use of equipment and techniques, tailored to individual needs and in consultation with course instructors. This includes interpreting verbal descriptions and sketches to assist students in developing their unique designs, while evaluating the practicality and commercial viability of these designs.
Guidance on Equipment UseOffer continuous guidance on specialized equipment and techniques, adhering to established safety policies. Responsibilities include preparing written instructions and a training program for each machine or process and maintaining precise training records. Ensure that only trained individuals utilize the facilities and equipment.
Demonstration of Technical ProcessesDemonstrate technical processes to both groups and individuals, integrating digital media and technology where beneficial to enhance learning experiences.
Student AssessmentEvaluate students’ competency, progress, and standard of work to ensure they meet the required expectations.
Facility IntroductionProvide new students with an introduction to the facilities, including vital health and safety advice.
Supervision of Student WorkSupervise students working in the facility in the absence of academic staff, following authorization from the appropriate department head and aligning with health and safety policies.
Design ConsultationAdvise students and staff regarding the feasibility and practicality of designs during the design phase, both in designated facilities and occasionally in studio environments.
Liaison with Academic StaffCoordinate with Heads of Schools or academic staff to support assessment needs, module requirements, and research or income generation projects throughout the academic year.
AV Support for EventsProvide audiovisual support for university events such as graduation ceremonies and the production of promotional media.
Equipment and Facilities Management
Workshop OrganizationManage the daily operations of the workshop to maximize student access and ensure that facilities and materials are used solely for authorized faculty purposes.
Equipment MaintenancePerform basic repairs on equipment and collaborate with the Technical Services Manager and external contractors for necessary servicing.
Capital Equipment RecommendationsAssist in preparing recommendations for the replacement of capital equipment, which includes obtaining quotes, contacting suppliers, and justifying selected equipment choices.
Inventory ManagementMaintain and monitor stocks of materials and consumables, reordering as necessary. Oversee the distribution of materials to students and keep accurate records in compliance with the Faculty Resale Policy.
Safety and CleanlinessEnsure that all areas are maintained in a clean, tidy, and safe condition for users, including proper disposal of hazardous waste.
Equipment InventoryMaintain an inventory of all facility equipment in alignment with faculty policies, ensuring compliance with financial procedures when requesting materials, repairs, and services.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
All staff must be familiar with and comply with the university’s Health and Safety Policy pertaining to their activities. It is expected that technical staff will obtain a First Aid Certificate and receive training for visual and full electrical safety tests on portable equipment utilized within their work area.
Skills and experience
- Educated to A Level or equivalent vocational qualification
- Relevant professional qualification in textiles related subject
- Demonstrable experience in industrial cloth manufacturing, and knowledge of textiles industry, or similar environment
- Experience of inducting/instructing students or equivalent in uses of a wide variety of techniques to create woven textiles/fashion accessories. Photoshop and illustrator experience.
- Able to produce original weave samples/designs to a high standard
- Able to maintain accurate records for equipment inventories, attendance monitoring and health & safety
- Deep knowledge of yarn and fibre properties.
- To be fully conversant with yarn counts and definitions and the ability to perform calculations based on this knowledge.
- Working knowledge of Scotweave, specifically, Dobby Designer and Jacquard Designer, and or other jacquard software, and design packages such as Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop.
- Working knowledge, or experience of, power looms, specifically CCI and Anytester power loom.
- Experience in the running and maintenance of TC2 loom
- Able to work to tight timescales and deal with users who have differing priorities
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, academic staff and the wider technical team in a busy teaching environment
- Ability to negotiate outcomes to ensure services are delivered in a fair and efficient manner
- Team working and strong organisational skills
- Excellent customer service skills, ensuring consistently high standards
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to lift and handle workshop and studio equipment including bulk materials
