Description

Role

The University of Edinburgh’s Information Services Group (ISG) invites applications from undergraduate students interested in working this summer as a Green Web Platforms Intern. The key purpose of this role is to conduct research to improve the knowledge and measurement of the environmental impact of the University’s web estate and digital teaching, learning and media platforms. This will build on innovative research conducted by student interns in 2024. The intern will be working alongside an existing Green Web Estate Intern and the Green Digital Design Intern, to together gain a deeper understanding into how the design process can influence digital sustainability metrics.

Within this role you will gain practical experience in conducting research on, and devising measures for, the University's web estate and platforms sustainability performance, as well as proposing achievable targets to enhance this performance. At the end of this internship, you will have achieved the following outcomes: documented best practices in Digital Sustainability, developed meaningful metrics and benchmarks for the environmental impact of the University's web platforms, and created mechanisms to monitor and report against these benchmarks. You will join the Digital Learning Applications and Media (DLAM) section, who are responsible for managing, building and supporting several platforms used by staff and students for teaching, learning and assessing.

You can expect to start work on the 2nd June 2025 and work until the 22nd August 2025. You will work between a minimum of 28 to a maximum of 35 hours per week (Monday to Friday) in a hybrid working pattern split between working from home (commutable distance from Edinburgh), and in Argyle House. Your preference on working hours within the above range can be discussed during the interview stage. You will be paid £12.67 per hour, plus £2.29 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your first payment date (should this position start when expected) will be 28th July 2025.

For more information on what to expect as an ISG Summer Intern and to hear from previous interns, please see our ISG Student Employment website. To learn specifically about the work that last years’ Green Web and Green Digital Interns accomplished, read their blog posts about their experiences.
