Role
The University of Edinburgh is currently offering a part-time opportunity for a student to join the User Experience team as a Digital Content Style Guide Intern. The User Experience (UX) team are responsible for working with colleagues across the University to improve websites, systems and services (such as MyEd and Learn) for staff and students. Within this role, you will research ways to improve the Editorial Style Guide, review the format of the guide, make it more user-centred for the University staff who use it daily, and to investigate new and innovative ways to apply the rules laid out in the guide. This is an exciting opportunity for you to gain experience in conducting user research and applying design methodology to make evidence-led suggestions for improvement, and presenting research findings to a range of stakeholders. You can expect to start work on the 27th October 2025 and work until the 31st May 2026, whilst working 15 hours per week. You will work in a hybrid pattern split between working from home and in the office in Argyle House (Edinburgh). During this position, you will be paid £13.01 per hour, plus £2.35 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your first payment date (should this position start when expected) will be 28th November 2025.
Duties and responsibilities
- Conducting research with staff users of the Editorial Style Guide to understand their needs and working methods;
- Analysing and critiquing rules and guidance in the existing Guide, considering other approaches to style guides used in Higher Education and other information-focused publishing realms;
- Applying design methodology to test ideas and make evidence-led suggestions for improvement;
- Exploring technical solutions (including AI) to implement the rules within the Guide;
- Writing and presenting reports and proposals to influence content design practice.
Skills and experience
Essential criteria:
- A current University of Edinburgh student (this post is designated for UoE student employment; therefore, you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). You also must not hold the position of 'Resident Assistant';
- Based in the UK for the duration of the work, able to work on campus when required (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications), and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person if needed;
- Demonstrable knowledge of good editorial practice, and designing content for websites;
- Proven ability to investigate and understand a problem and propose potential solutions;
- Demonstrable ability to gather research data, and present it, to communicate key findings to key stakeholders;
- Proven ability to communicate your thinking clearly to a range of non-expert audiences, and persuade others to your position.
- Understanding of User Experience (UX) design approaches.
