Role
The University of Edinburgh’s Information Services Group (ISG) invites applications from undergraduate students interested in working this summer as an Open Textbook Creation Intern. The key purpose of this role is to develop and refine a process for designing and creating open, digital textbooks and eBooks, and work with the Graphic Design team to design and create eBook prototypes.
Within this role, you will gain practical experience in content editing and stakeholder management. At the end of this internship, you will have achieved the following outcomes: contributed to the development of one of more prototype open textbooks and the development of a process for creating open textbooks. You will support the University’s Open Educational Resources (OER) and Graphic Design Services. The OER service provides support for staff and students to use and create OERs and open knowledge in their learning and teaching practice. The Graphic Design Service provides comprehensive digital and print design services for clients within, and external to the university.
You can expect to start work on the 2nd June 2025 and work until the 22nd August 2025. You will work between a minimum of 25 to a maximum of 35 hours per week (Monday to Friday) in a hybrid working pattern split between working from home (commutable distance from Edinburgh), and in Argyle House. You will be expected to work in Argyle House a minimum of three days per week. Your preference on working hours within the above range can be discussed during the interview stage. You will be paid £12.67 per hour, plus £2.29 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your first payment date (should this position start when expected) will be 28th July 2025.

Duties and responsibilities
- Working closely with the Open Educational Resources and Graphic Design Service to ensure the creation of open eTextbook prototypes;
- Liaising with subject matter experts across the University to review and develop content suitable for the creation of open textbooks and eBooks;
- Copy editing and proof-reading content; drafting new content where necessary;
- Developing documentation and templates to establish formal processes for creating open textbooks;
- Ensuring clear copyright of all content and applying an appropriate open license.
Skills and experience
Essential criteria:
- A current University of Edinburgh undergraduate student (you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). Internships are open to all undergraduate students, except those in their final year of study;
- Based in the UK for the duration of the work, within commutable distance of Edinburgh, and able to work on campus (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications), and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person if needed;
- Evidence of strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders;
- Proven strong attention to detail, particularly when proofreading and editing written content;
- Evidence of time management skills, with the ability to coordinate your own activities and workload.
Desirable criteria:
- Demonstrable experience reviewing and/or editing content for publication (e.g., print, social media, or websites);
- Familiarity with using eBooks and eTextbooks, and digital learning resources;
- Proven familiarity with copyright and open licensing.
