Role
Unitemps are recruiting for a Administrative Assistant within the Genetics, Evolution & Environment department. The role is to work the date of 1st April 2025 and will run until 30th September 2025 part time at 7 hours per week . Payment is set at £17.45 + holiday pay per hour and the role will be HYBRID based.
The Annals of Human Genetics (The Annals), co-owned by the UCL Department of Genetics, Evolution & Environment and the Publisher John Wiley & Sons, is an international journal publishing rigorously peer-reviewed, high-quality original research articles as well as topical review articles. The principal aim of The Annals is to increase understanding of the biology of human variation and the role genetics plays in disease, health and evolution.
The major topics covered in The Annals include;
- Human genome variation
- Human population and evolutionary genetics
- Epigenomics
- Pharmacogenomics
- Statistical genetics and Computational genomics
- Genetics of common multifactorial diseases, other complex traits and Quantitative Trait Loci
- Mendelian disorders and their molecular pathology
- Social and ethical issues
The Annals has an international Editorial Board, with Senior Editors who are responsible for handling submitted manuscripts within their specialty.
An individual is sought to assist the Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Rosemary Ekong. The position is for two half days of 3.5 hours each, per week (7 hours a week in total), for a period of 6 months.
The purpose of the role is to provide administrative support to the Editor-in-Chief, and through her, the Senior Editors. Specifically, the Administrative Assistant will report directly to the Editor-in-Chief to ensure the continuation of an expedited peer review process, and will be involved in promoting the journal by providing support for the publication of special editions.
Duties and responsibilities
Assisting the Editor-in-Chief and Senior Editors in the delivery of an expedited peer review process by:
- Identifying potential Senior Editors through online searches, with advice on the specialties required.
- Maintain a database of current and potential Senior Editors and Reviewers, and key word information.
- Assisting Senior Editors, if required, in identifying potential reviewers through online searches, for peer review of submitted manuscripts
- Checking that authors of manuscripts accepted for revisions have conformed to the journal’s editorial policies, e.g. on ethical approval for human studies, the use of appropriate geographic terms in studies of human ancestry, and genetic nomenclature
- To identify cover images among submitted papers
- To identify potential authors and collate articles for the preparation of special editions of the journal
- To help in organising the annual virtual editorial meeting
- Any other duties as appropriate
Skills and experience
- Postgraduate or higher, with a background in human genetics and a continued interest in scientific research
- Good organisational skills, ability to manage workload and meet deadlines
- Attention to detail
- Fluent in English language and with good written and verbal communication skills
- Computer skills, in particular, performing online searches for key information; maintaining a database of essential information
- Pro-active, resourceful, adaptable, and with good interpersonal skills

Hybrid (1 day a month in the office)
