Role
Senior Residential Community Assistants (SRCAs) will have the same responsibilities as a Residential Community Assistant (RCA) and additional responsibilities as mentors to other team members. SRCAs act as a liaison between the staff team and the senior management team (Residential Community Coordinator, RCC). You will be responsible for building Community Wellbeing, Community Behaviour and Community Building within the Warwick residential community and support the RCCs in enhancing the provision of the RCT. You will be expected to demonstrate commitment to the residential life of our students by working to create a sense of community that contributes to the development of inclusive hall communities and promote a sense of belonging alongside physical and mental wellbeing.
Duties and responsibilities
General:
- Work alongside the RCT and wider University teams to develop an inclusive, supportive and safe community for Warwick students living in our halls of residence.
- Participate in a rota during both University term time and vacation periods, working 12-15 hours per week, Monday to Sunday. During this time you will meet with students and deliver a range of activities and events alongside responding appropriately to residential student concerns, issues and incidents as required.
- Participate in the on-call rota (student visa holders exempt) to ensure that our students get the right support during out-of-hours periods.
- Act as a role model to students and RCAs, promoting the core values of Warwick University.
- To undertake all training required of the role.
- Participate in key events throughout the year, including but not limited to, Arrivals Weekend, Welcome Week, Open and Offer Holder Days.
- Engage with and facilitate with 1:1’s and team meetings as directed for personal and professional development alongside key service and/or university updates.
- Be managed by and take leadership from the Residential Community Coordinators (RCCs), utilising their support and guidance.
SRCA specific duties, on top of RCA role:
- Meet regularly with RCCs in team meetings to plan provision, discuss emerging concerns and contribute to the resolution of these individually or as a team.
- Help the RCC’s to manage the shift rota, coordinating shift swaps amongst the team.
- Regularly check in with the RCAs in your team, supporting any minor concern and reporting any potential problems to the RCCs.
- Offer advice and support to RCAs on building community, supporting with the planning of events/activities and pastoral advice for staff and student wellbeing.
- To collate feedback and suggestions from the RCAs, relaying these to the RCCs to find areas for improvement.
- Be highly visible and supportive to your team of RCAs, supporting them within role and challenging any inappropriate behaviour.
- Attend any appropriate joint meetings across the University with the RCC/Head of Service.
- Assist in the development and facilitation of Impact Sessions.
- Hold community meetings, where appropriate, to gain insight into provision alongside suggestions for improvement.
- Support RCCs in data collection within the RCT for evidenced based service provision.
- Be alert to the needs of new students who may transfer into the community throughout the year.
- Organise opportunities for the RCA and SRCA team to socialise in formal and informal settings, in collaboration with the RCCs, for team building.
- Practice risk management when planning events and activities.
- Support the RCCs in the delivering of training throughout the year and support in ensuring all training is completed by RCAs.
Skills and experience
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to manage crisis and incidents calmly and effectively and knowing when to escalate and identifying the appropriate person.
- Ability to prepare factual reports and good attention to detail
- Ability to use initiative and to lead on projects.
- Strong organisational skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong understanding of the operational workings of the RCT, its core values and goals.
- Computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc.
- Awareness of barriers to engagement for the RCT and solution focussed, measurable ideas to overcome these.
- Ability and willingness to commit to 12-15 hours per week across the academic year, including vacation and mandatory dates as per the candidate information pack available at Become a Residential Community Assistant Ability and willingness to commit to participating in the on-call rota (unless a student visa holder) across the academic year, including vacation.
