Role
The Sighted Guide plays a vital role in assisting individuals with visual impairments by providing safe and effective navigation support. This position requires a compassionate and patient individual who can foster independence while ensuring the comfort and security of the person being guided. The Sighted Guide will work in various environments, including public spaces, community events, and private settings, adapting to the specific needs of each individual. This will be an ongoing role.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Assist individuals with visual impairments in navigating various environments safely.
  • Provide clear verbal instructions and descriptions of surroundings to enhance understanding.
  • Offer physical support when necessary, such as guiding through doorways or over obstacles.
  • Maintain a respectful and professional demeanor at all times, ensuring the dignity of the individual is upheld.
  • Collaborate with other support staff or volunteers to create a seamless experience for individuals requiring assistance.
  • Attend training sessions to stay informed about best practices in guiding techniques and disability awareness.

Skills and experience

  • Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities is advantageous but not essential.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively are crucial.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine desire to assist others are key attributes for success in this role.
  • A good level of physical fitness is required to navigate various terrains and environments comfortably.
