Description

Role

Unitemps are recruiting for a Project Ambassador (Engineering Systemiser) within the Space & Climate Physics department. The role is to work the date of 10th March and will run until 30th June 2025 part time at 5 hours per week. Payment is set at £14.14+ holiday pay per hour and the role will be CAMPUS based.

We welcome candidates looking to join a team of engineers primarily associated with UCL and UK industry (advised by senior industry leaders) working with local schools to co-create innovative tabletop games, by focusing on principles and core concepts of Systems Thinking and Systems Engineering. There are currently three active application themes focusing on transport, health, and energy systems, with few more emerging related to digital & AI, built environment, and space. The successful candidate is expected to join either of transport and health (at top priority), and then digital & AI or space teams.

This would be unique discovery-based learning experience for students to think and act like a Systems Engineer, and practice system thinking, critical thinking, problem-finding, creative problem-solving, teamwork, and communication. You will learn how to translate complex engineering challenges (related to energy, transport, health) into gamified mechanics for lay audience; and gain insight into engineering careers and required competencies. Students with active engagement in development and delivery of the games will get an “Engineering Systemiser” certificate endorsed by UCL, as well as access to travel fund and digital assets (e.g., engineers’ storyboard).

Brief Background: Engineering Systemisers is an UCL initiative, funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering, with the vision to equip the next generation with the mindset, toolkits, and knowledge to tackle emerging national and global challenges through Engineering Systems Thinking. By enabling a co-development tailored process, the project aims to enhance schools’ approaches (primarily aged 11-18) to co-produce engaging and practical STEM lesson resources, and for students to start implementing Systems Thinking habits, concepts, and tools within their everyday study and life.

Duties and responsibilities

The candidate will be responsible for:

  • Attending project group meetings (usually every two weeks) and contribute to discussion about active games.
  • Work with team members on the same theme to refine the game ideas and support project lead in developing the guidebook.
  • Deliver the theme game at local secondary schools (e.g., during STEM club), acting as facilitator of the sessions, and refine the game idea based on school feedback
  • Proactively promote the project both within and outside UCL, to gain new project partners and build positive relationships.

Skills and experience

  • This role requires a natural instinct about inspiring the next generation and gamification
  • This role requires the candidate to travel to Schools in Greater London and surrounding
  • Basic knowledge of Systems Thinking and Systems Engineering would be desirable (but not mandatory)
  • The opportunity is available to all undergraduate and postgraduate students, however STEM students at postgraduate level are desirable
  • Experience related to educational game development, public engagement, and working with secondary schools would be desirable.
