Description
Role
*Ringfenced to current LJMU Mathematics or a Mathematics with Finance students*
Duties and responsibilities
Within our team of several students and mathematics lecturers you will help design two new project-based activities for the mathematics curriculum. In the first stage of your internship you will develop group project tasks where students will work in a team to address two difficult societal challenges of our time: 1. Calculate your personal carbon footprint and 2. Develop a fair and transparent compensation scheme for the impact of slavery. The activities will consist of three pillars - an analysis component where the students will develop mathematical frameworks for calculating the carbon footprint or a compensation payment for the impact of slavery, a presentation component where each team will present their projects to the class and an evaluation component where the team will reflect how their ideas could be implemented in practice.
In the second stage you will test the activities that you developed - you will work in a team to develop your own frameworks for compensation payments and calculating your carbon footprints - you will assess if your tasks are interesting and challenging and if they can realistically be carried out in the planned time frame.
Skills and experience
The role is open to mathematics and mathematics with finance students from all levels. An interest in developing activities that apply mathematics and statistics to timely real-world applications is essential. One of your most important contributions to the project will be your perspective as a student - you will ensure that the activities will be both interesting and achievable for future mathematics students.
