Role

Unitemps are recruiting for a Research Technician within the Institute of Prion Diseases department. The role is to work the date of 3rd March 2025 and will run until 30th May 2025 full time at 36.5 hours per week . Payment is set at £18.72+ holiday pay per hour and the role will be CAMPUS based.

The Institute is headed by Professor John Collinge FRS, and comprises MRC, UCL and grant funded clinicians, scientists, research/technical staff and professional services staff.

The post-holder will be recruited to a research programme led by Professor Jan Bieschke and will be part of the protein structure and dynamics team. The post requires solid proficiency in the basic techniques in protein biochemistry as well as the willingness and aptitude to learn new biochemical and biophysical techniques. The post-holder will be required to provide research support for long term projects investigating the molecular basis of prion diseases, and potentially includes work in ACDP Cat III laboratories.

Duties and responsibilities

Main duties

  • Support for prion evolution project
  • Protein aggregation assays
  • PAGE-SDS / Western blotting
  • Prion amplification assays
  • Electron and fluorescence microscopy (training offered)

Professional and Quality Standards

  • Attention to detail and meticulous record keeping are required for this position. Some of the work will be carried out at containment level 3 and will require training in, and adherence to, specialized procedures. They will also be responsible for general laboratory organization.

General

  • As duties and responsibilities change, the job description will be reviewed and amended in consultation with the post holder.
  • The post holder will carry out any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the line manager.

Skills and experience

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard from a recognised higher education institute
  • Protein purification, characterization
  • Working in ACDP CL2 laboratories
  • Western blotting
  • Electron microscopy
  • Fluorescence microscopy
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, able to contribute data to the preparation of manuscripts for peer reviewed journals and scientific presentations. Able to write operational documents for certain aspects of the research and its governance.
  • Able to define priorities and organise their time efficiently.
  • Able to work effectively with a PhD student on a joint project
