Role
Unitemps are recruiting for a Sustainability Communications Intern. This is a full-time role at 36.5 hours per week. This role is for a March 3rd 2025 start date and has a projected end date of August 3rd 2025. Payment is set at £16.37 per hour + holiday pay. This role will be UCL hybrid working, with up to 3 days a week working from home and 2 days in our Bloomsbury office.
Sustainable UCL is a dynamic, innovative team dedicated to making UCL a more sustainable institution. Our team is committed to embedding sustainability into all aspects of university life, from operations and research to teaching and community engagement. In the upcoming year, we will be launching UCL’s new 2024-2027 Sustainability Plan, which will set the strategic direction for sustainability efforts across the university for the next five-years.
The role of Sustainability Communications Intern offers an excellent opportunity for a creative individual with a passion for sustainability, and skills in communications, content creation, project management and social media. The successful candidate will play a critical role within the sustainability team and the broader institution, supporting UCL in achieving its sustainability goals and commitments.The role is a full-time position, requiring 36.5 hours work per week. The role is hybrid and there is flexibility to work from home for up to 3 days each week. The initial contract is for a fixed term of 6 months.
Duties and responsibilities
Leading sustainability campaigns:
- An exciting chance to lead and innovate new sustainability campaigns and communications, offering the opportunity to devise and implement your own creative ideas.
- Working and partnering with wider UCL teams to embed sustainable content into their communications, including UCL’s catering partner, Gather & Gather, the Students’ Union (SU) and Accommodation, and Campus Experience teams.
Researching and writing:
- Researching and copywriting sustainability-related content for various formats and audiences, including Sustainable UCL webpages, case-studies, social media posts, and Sustainable UCL newsletters.
- Editing and proofreading content for accuracy, clarity, and consistency.
Content creation and social media:
- Creating and editing high-quality branded images, graphics, and videos, with a particular focus on producing engaging social media posts and reels (Including X, Bluesky, LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram).
- Collaborating with team members and the wider university to develop creative content that highlights UCL’s sustainability initiatives and campaigns (The Loop, Wild Bloomsbury, and Positive Climate).
- Managing UCL’s Instagram, X, BlueSky, and LinkedIn accounts, including monitoring content and community management.
Performance monitoring:
- Using web analytics and social media tools to track and report on the performance of our digital content and updating our monthly engagement tracker.
- Analysing data to identify trends, measure engagement, and inform future content strategies.
- Providing regular updates and recommendations to the Senior Communications and Engagement Officer, and wider engagement team about content performance.
Event support:
- Assisting with the planning and delivery of sustainability-related events, including UCL Swap Shops and Bike Bonanzas, UCL’s Annual Sustainability Awards, Welcome Period, and Sustainability Fair.
- Supporting with videography and photography at events, including organising and distributing post-event images and videos.
- Providing social media coverage during events to maximise engagement and reach.
- Writing up and promoting blog pieces and content after events.
- Contributing to fostering a vibrant and inclusive sustainability culture within the UCL community through these events.
Administrative support:
- Managing content planners and calendars and ensuring timely publication of content across Sustainable UCL channels.
- Assisting with scheduling, budgeting, and invoicing for communications-related activities.
- Coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, including the Student’s Union and UCL central social teams to ensure the smooth operation of communication efforts.
- Providing a monthly roundup of Sustainable UCL communications and events to the Sustainability team.
Skills and experience
A recent graduate, with key skills in communications, content creation, project management and social media. This could be through a degree, relevant work-experience, volunteering or other personal projects in this area.
Essential criteria:
- Holds an undergraduate degree or equivalent experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with high-quality copywriting skills.
- Creative, with editing and visual content creation skills.
- A natural collaborator and team player, able to both support others in their work and lead their own projects.
- Organised, with excellent project management skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively.
- Ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders on partnerships, projects or communications.
- Passionate about sustainability and eager to contribute to UCL’s sustainability goals, with an understanding of sustainability in a large organisation.
- Proficient in using social media platforms, particularly Instagram, and creating social media assets such as stories and reels.
- Ability to problem solve and a determination to overcome challenges.
Desired criteria:
- Creative editing skills in software such as Photoshop and Canva.
- Photography or videography skills.
- Experience in designing and delivering events.

UCL; Hybrid working, with up to 3 days a week working from home and 2 days in our Bloomsbury office.
