Description

Role
The University of Edinburgh is currently offering a part-time opportunity for a student to join the Open Research Team as an Open Research Analysis Intern. Open research, also widely referred to as open science, relates to how research is performed and how knowledge is shared based on the principle that research should be as open as possible. It also enables research to take advantage of digital technology. The team is dedicated to advancing the University’s Open Research (OR) ambitions, and monitoring its uptake by researchers. A key area in this regard is establishing the best way to support researchers in adopting OR. Within this role, you will contribute to expanding the information known on current practices, by conducting research regarding the UK Reproducibility Network Indicators of Open Research, whilst analysing their feasibility and collection potential.

This is an exciting opportunity for you to gain experience in working with complex data from multiple internal and external open and external proprietary sources, and creating reports and visualisations that are essential for outlining the project’s future priorities.

You can expect to start work on the w/c 17th March 2025, and work until June 2025. The successful student can expect to work 9 hours per week, in a hybrid working pattern split between working from home and in Argyle House. During this position you will be paid £15.82 per hour, plus £2.86 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your first payment date (should this position start when expected) will be 28th April 2025.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Analysing outputs from the UK Reproducibility Network “Indicators of Open Research” pilots, and producing a report on how well they meet the team’s needs;
  • Further developing the team’s existing Open Research Dashboard, by adding in the useful indicators identified during the UKRN project, where feasible;
  • Identifying the useful indicators from the UKRN pilots, which cannot currently be collected from internal systems or external, publicly available sources;
  • Making recommendations on how the indicators may be collected in the future.

Skills and experience

Essential criteria:

  • A current University of Edinburgh student (this post is designated for UoE student employment; therefore, you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). You also must not hold the position of ‘Resident Assistant’;
  • Based in the UK for the duration of the work, able to work on campus when required (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications), and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person if needed;
  • Evidence of excellent attention to detail;
  • Proven experience of working in data science, conducting data analysis, handling numeric and textual data;
  • Demonstrable experience of presenting complex numerical and textual information to a broad audience;
  • Proven knowledge of at least one data visualisation tool, preferably Power BI.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience of text mining from publicly available data sources, such as Open Access publication repositories;
  • Proven understanding of digital repositories, metadata and academic publishing;
  • Demonstrable experience of creating a dashboard using data visualisation tools.

Location
Hybrid, split between working from home and in Argyle House.
