Role
The University of Edinburgh is currently offering a part-time opportunity for two students to join the Research Data Service team as Data Monitor Interns (Pure). The Research Data Service provides a comprehensive suite of research data management services to the University research community, which enable compliance with University policies, including the Research Data Management Policy;. Pure; and the University’s Current Research Information System (CRIS), which connects research staff and their publications, projects and activities information. Within this role, you will assist the Research Data Service team to gain a clear understanding of when and where researchers are using and sharing their data by validating and approving dataset records, whilst adding metadata where necessary.
This is an exciting opportunity for you to gain a range of transferable skills, including working with data and metadata, cataloguing and quality assurance. You will also have the opportunity to learn more about Open Research (OR) and participate in OR and Resource Data Management activities.
You can expect to start work on the 17th March 2025 and work until the 4th July 2025, whilst working 12 hours per week in a hybrid working pattern split between working from home, and in Argyle House. During this position you will be paid £13.84 per hour, plus £2.52 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your first payment date (should this position start when expected) will be the 28th April 2025.
Duties and responsibilities
- Reviewing records to be imported into the Pure Current Research Information System (CRIS), correcting and adding metadata where necessary;
- Linking imported records to those of other output types already in PURE;
- Making notes of recurring problems with the above processes so that they can be improved;
- Contributing to the development of Open Research training and support materials.
Skills and experience
Essential criteria:
- A current University of Edinburgh Undergraduate, Postgraduate Taught, or Part-Time Postgraduate Research student (this post is designated for UoE student employment; therefore, you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). You also must not hold the position of ‘Resident Assistant’;
- Based in the UK for the duration of the work, able to work on campus when required (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications), and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person if needed;
- Evidence of excellent attention to detail;
- Proven knowledge of data curation, in particular the importance of good quality metadata and accurate record keeping;
- Demonstrable knowledge of Open Research principles and practices, particularly Research Data Management.
Desirable Criteria:
- Proven experience of cataloguing or working with metadata;
- Demonstrable knowledge of Research Data Management principles and practices.
