Role
The University of Edinburgh is currently offering a part-time opportunity for two students to join the uCreate Team as uCreate Makerspace Student Technicians. uCreate provides equipment, advice, training and support to help students and staff make (almost) anything for free! Within this role, you will deliver training and support in areas including 3D printing, CNC and Laser cutting, 3D digitisation, virtual production and Digital Making & Design Software. You will help maintain kit and software, all while providing an approachable, knowledgeable staff presence for users interested in using Makerspace technology within their projects.

This is an exciting opportunity for you to gain experience in presenting to a range of audiences, and managing the safe use and maintenance of the equipment, while developing your skills in using hardware and software equipment offered by Makerspace.

You can expect to start work on the 1st April 2025 and work until 31st July 2025. The successful students will work 6 hours per week in uCreate Makerspace, Main Library. The general working hours are 2:00pm – 8:00pm on one day per week, and 10:00am – 4:00pm during the induction period. During this position you will be paid £15.82 per hour, plus £2.86 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your first payment date (should this position start when expected) will be 28th May 2025.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Delivering essential support for uCreate Makerspace activities, helping users bring their creative ideas to life;
  • Leading engaging 1:1 and group training sessions, outlining safe and appropriate use of the makerspace equipment available;
  • Assisting with the upkeep and organisation of uCreate Multimedia equipment provision, reporting any safety or maintenance issues, whilst proactively solving problems within the scope of your experience;
  • Maintaining a friendly staff presence, supporting remote and on-site users, whilst facilitating the safe use of equipment, and supervising where necessary;
  • Supporting the day-to-day operations of the Makerspace, while fostering a collaborative and inspiring environment, where creativity and innovation can thrive.

Skills and experience
Essential criteria:

  • A current University of Edinburgh student (this post is designated for UoE student employment; therefore, you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). You also must not hold the position of ‘Resident Assistant’;
  • Based in the UK for the duration of the work, able to work on campus when required (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications), and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person if needed;
  • Proven enthusiasm for creating and making, whilst exploring new technologies;
  • Demonstrable understanding of at least two different types of Makerspace equipment, such as 3D printing, 3D scanning, virtual production, digital making software, design software, laser cutting, CNC, etc;
  • Evidence of strong communication skills and the ability to communicate complex information clearly to a non-technical audience;
  • Evidence of an organised and proactive approach to work, with excellent problem-solving skills;
  • Demonstrable ability to work both individually and as part of a team.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Clear understanding of, or previous experience as a user of, the uCreate Makerspace environment and interdisciplinary potential;
  • Proven experience of advising others regarding design, materials or manufacturing techniques;
  • Evidence of practical skills in equipment repair and maintenance.
