Role

Unitemps are recruiting for two Student Adviser Support within the Student Support and Wellbeing Services department. The role is to work the date of 3rd February 2025 and will run until 1st August 2025 full time at 36.5 hours per week . Payment is set at £18.72+ holiday pay per hour and the role will be HYBRID based.

 
UCL Student Support and Wellbeing Services (SSWS) provides information, advice and welfare support for all registered students, including delivery of related student events.
 
The Student Adviser Support provides support to the Student Adviser team and the wider SSWS team. They are an initial point of contact for students accessing the sider SSWS services, which they represent and promote. The Student Adviser Support predominantly helps provide support to students transitioning into university life and other priority students through outreach, answering enquiries by phone, and through ask UCL (the student enquiry system), and hosting year-round community building activities. Student Advisers identify challenges students may be facing and work with them to find a solution to ensure each student has the very best experience while studying at UCL.

Duties and responsibilities

  • The postholder will provide key administrative support to the Student Advisers team.
  • This includes responding to Student Enquiries, booking appointments, updating spreadsheets, and sharing key information
  • The postholder will provide advice, liaise with services and UCL staff to ensure support for disabled students and those who may be affected by wellbeing and/or mental health conditions
  • To proactively reach out to a specified group of students within an academic unit to establish their wellbeing, check on their progress, support them to settle into life at UCL and encourage engagement with relevant services.
  • To fulfil outreach targets in line with strategic preventative measures, complete relevant administrative processes and appropriate follow up with students and stakeholders and to adhere to set deadlines.
  • To assist with the planning, creation, and delivery of a portfolio of events in the academic calendar to support student wellbeing and to help students identify and engage with opportunities outside the taught curriculum as a means of strengthening a sense of community.
  • The post holder will be required to work across Bloomsbury and UCL East campuses, although will be predominantly based at one. 
  • The postholder will work alongside colleagues across UCL to strengthen the local support provision and facilitate effective connection with students. 
  • The postholder will be required to work in a hybrid manner and be flexible to work from both sites as and when required.
  • The postholder will complement the work of mental health and disability advisers, student advisers, teaching and learning staff, and peer support programmes which are available locally
  • This post will be integral in helping to foster a sense of community and belonging.- In undertaking these responsibilities the postholder will liaise with students, members of staff in UCL academic units and UCL Professional Services divisions, and external organisations.
  • To maintain an up-to-date knowledge and understanding of key policies relating to Student Support and Student Registry Services including SORA, extenuating circumstances and the attendance policy.
  • To ensure effective communication with line manager regarding work in progress, implementation of developments, and emerging trends or issues.
  • To keep up to date with developments in student wellbeing and attend any relevant training events.
  • To ensure the confidentiality of students’ personal information in accordance with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and relevant UCL protocols and policies.

Skills and experience

  • Knowledge and abilities commensurate with education to A-Level or equivalent
  • Proven experience in role/s which involving supporting others, preferably in an educational or health and social care setting
  • An understanding of confidentiality and data protection (Equality Act, Data Protection Act and GDPR)
  • Experience of advising students on a wide range of wellbeing matters
  • Experience of working to multiple deadlines and working collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders
  • Experience of developing and delivering impactful presentations, workshops and training to a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Good working knowledge of the Microsoft Office software suite
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including an ability to: listen/instruct and advise; liaise with all types of people; exercise tact and diplomacy and maintain confidentiality
  • Excellent organisational skills, including the ability to manage own workload and prioritise effectively
  • The ability to compile and maintain accurate and detailed records- The ability to convey and interpret information according to set procedures
  • The ability to exercise discreet and logical judgment
  • The ability to maintain a calm attitude under pressure, for example when dealing with challenging and stressful situations
  • Able to work proactively and independently with minimal supervision
  • A commitment to the continuous improvement of services and a proven ability to make changes based on feedback- Listening to others and supporting them with compassion
  • Making best practice an absolute priority
  • Willing to try new ideas which may improve outcomes
  • Experience of delivering a service in Higher Education
  • A relevant professional qualification in the field of mental health
  • Knowledge and understanding of UK disability legislation- Knowledge of the SITS student information system
  • Skilled in using databases, online diary software and/or client management software
