Role
The post holder will be responsible to the Head of School and will undertake teaching and administration duties supporting the work of the School of Psychology and developing and enhancing its reputation, both internal and external to the University. Particular duties will involve leading 1st year skills tutorials and marking coursework.  The post holder will play a key role in maintaining the delivery of the highest-quality service to students, the design and development of teaching materials, and in the handling of student enquiries.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Supporting students in tutorials and laboratory sessions associated with practical and transferable skills modules for first year Psychology students. For example, assisting in practical sessions, helping students with data analysis (quantitative and qualitative), research methods and use of Stats software associated with these processes. 
  • Planning and organising course material (including writing, editing and supervising the production of material). This will also include publishing course material on the School’s virtual learning environment (Blackboard). 
  • Monitoring of student activities and provision of responses to student enquiries (e.g. through Blackboard, email, telephone, face-to-face etc.) in order to ensure student satisfaction. Providing practical and academic support to students throughout their studies (e.g. via Help Desk).
  • Marking related to Skills Tutorials and practical reports for first year students (including familiarisation of marking and individual report content requirements and completing feedback sheets). Other associated duties as directed (e.g. assessing oral presentations).
  • Providing teaching-relating administrative support to the courses to aid in the smooth running of the courses (e.g. checking Turnitin for plagiarism issues).

Skills and experience

Essential:

  • A BSc in Psychology at 2i or above*
  • Proven knowledge of undergraduate level Psychology statistics and research methods*
  • Ability and willingness to undertake teaching of psychology at undergraduate level *
  • Ability and willingness to undertake marking of student assessments at undergraduate level Competency at IT tasks and ability to operate within a computerised environment e.g. use of Microsoft office, Virtual Learning Environments, e-mail and web-browsers.*
  • The ability to teach undergraduate students in Skills Tutorials and practicals*
  • Ability to use and advise students on statistics using a stats package (e.g. SPSS or JASP etc.)*
  • Ability and willingness to undertake administration
  • Be able to demonstrate good teaching skills required in a small group setting
  • Good interpersonal skills, team working and ability to interact effectively with colleagues
  • Ability to work on own initiative and independently
  • High level of proficiency in English, sufficient to undertake research, teaching and administrative activities utilising English Language materials and to communicate effectively with staff and student
Desirable:
 
  • GBC accreditation for Psychology Bachelor’s degree *
  • Experience of teaching and assessing undergraduate Psychology students*
  • A PhD (or close to completion of a PhD) in Psychology or related subject *
  • Ability to innovate in the delivery of teaching
