Role
Unitemps are recruiting for a Coordinator - Sustainable Aviation within the Grand Challenges department. The role is to work the date of 16th January 2025 and will run until 19th December 2025 full time at 37.5 hours per week . Payment is set at £ 22.66+ holiday pay per hour and the role will be HYBRID based.
This year the Grand Challenge of Climate Crisis launched a strategic initiative to address the urgent need for sustainability in aviation, considering environmental, financial, and mental health factors. This includes the establishment of the UCL Centre for Sustainable Aviation, a venue for interdisciplinary research at UCL which will operate with partners from across the whole aviation value chain.
The postholder will support the Director of Innovation and Partnership of the UCL Centre for Sustainable Aviation (UCL CSA). The role is pivotal to understanding, developing, and supporting UCL’s capacity to help the sector embrace rising innovation and operational challenges and meet its sustainability targets.
Duties and responsibilities
- Governance and representation• Arrange and support meetings of the UCL CSA governance group
- Support the Director of Innovation and Partnership in meetings and act as secretary when required
- Attend and contribute to regular meetings with the UCL Grand Challenges team
- Represent UCL CSA at meetings within UCL and with external partners or potential partners
- Arrange and deliver panel meetings to decide the outcome of any funding calls
- Crossing disciplinary and sectoral boundaries; co-creation and partnership
- Maintain a broad overview of the research landscape in relevant disciplinary areas
- Identify potential opportunities and initiate new cross-disciplinary synergies across UCL
- Support collaboration with external academic and non-academic stakeholders
- Project-manage delivery of multi-partner projects
- Advise on the scope for next-step development of any supported initiatives
- Support the development, implementation and monitoring of new initiatives
- Monitoring and reporting• Monitor UCL CSA activities: evaluate outcomes, outputs, and impacts
- Create progress reports for the Founding Director and Director of Innovation and Partnership
- Educational programmes
- Support the development and set up of education programmes that incorporate the latest advancements in sustainable aviation
- Collaborate with academic departments to integrate sustainable aviation topics into existing curricula
- Industry collaboration and knowledge exchange
- Support collaborations and relationships with key stakeholders in the aviation industry
- Organise workshops, seminars, and conferences that bring together UCL researchers and industry experts to discuss sustainable aviation challenges and innovations
- Professional development
- Support the scoping and design of continuing professional development (CPD) courses
- Evaluate the effectiveness of CPD courses and support redesign based on participant and industry feedback
- Outreach, communication and events
- Work with communications colleagues to build awareness of and interest in the UCL CSA’s research and educational programmes• Create impactful content to showcase the work of UCL CSA (e.g. articles, blog posts, thought pieces, publications, webinars, presentations and podcasts)
- Communicate UCL CSA outputs to a broad audience: including, academia, industry partners, and the public
- Update UCL CSA webpages
- Organise events for academic and public audiences
- Represent UCL at industry events, conferences, and media engagements, highlighting the university’s contributions to sustainable aviation
- Finance and fundraising
- Monitor and report on financial commitments and expenditure against set budgets
Skills and experience
- Strong administrative, organisational and project-management skills and proven success in delivering results to demanding deadlines
- A clear understanding of the organisational culture of a large research-intensive organisation and the ability to influence change in that context
- Experience of identifying, supporting and building cross-disciplinary collaborative activities
- Well-developed influencing, facilitation and negotiating skills, enabling the postholder to build and develop effective working relationships at all levels
- Understanding of and commitment to UCL's Grand Challenges
- Current knowledge, understanding and application of equal opportunity and diversity issues as they relate to this role
- Proven ability of strategic planning and major project, programme, portfolio and change management
- Ability to work independently, managing and prioritising your own workload, while remaining an effective team member
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to research, draft, critique and present reports on complex issues to a broad range of audiences
- Strong administrative and organisational skills, and proven success in delivering results to demanding deadlines
- Strong analytical skills and a proven record of conveying a compelling vision
- Demonstrable confidence in communicating with senior members of academic and administrative staff (in all areas) and external stakeholders in person and through written communication
- Commitment to generating societal impact from university research
- High degree of motivation, creativity, resilience, energy and enthusiasm- Capable of dealing with difficult situations diplomatically
