THE ROLE 

De Montfort University is looking to recruit Examination Invigilators to add to its existing pool of staff. The University’s exams take place throughout the year and Examination Invigilators are employed to ensure that candidates are treated in a fair and proper manner in an environment that enables them to perform to the best of their ability. Duties include setting up exam rooms, enforcing University regulations and supervising candidates.

You will be expected to approach the job in a serious and professional manner with emphasis being attached to punctuality and reliability and providing students with a courteous and professional invigilation service . You should also have the ability to communicate effectively with people, verbally and in writing and be able to work accurately and collaboratively with Principal and Senior Invigilators.

This role is a campus based role working a variety of hours. 

Duties and responsibilities

•    transport examination materials (e.g. papers, stationery, etc) to and from exam rooms across the campus

•    set up exam rooms, ensuring papers and materials are allocated correctly and that the room is neat, tidy and free from health and safety hazards

•    maintain absolute confidentiality regarding the content of question papers and scripts, and the individual circumstances of students

•    complete routine student registers of students in attendance

•    assist Principal and Senior Invigilators as directed 

•    assist entry in to and out of exam rooms, including the evacuation of students in the event of an emergency

•    act as first point of contact for students, assess their needs and ensure they are given the appropriate information or referred to the appropriate member of staff to resolve their query or issue; this will include assisting distressed students, those who become ill during an exam and students with a wide range of reasonable adjustments as advised by the Exams Office

•    respond to student enquiries in a professional and timely manner, establishing or clarifying the facts required to progress non-routine enquiries to a more senior member of staff

•    escort students to toilet facilities as and when required

•    monitor student behaviour to ensure examination conditions and university regulations and protocols are maintained; escalate concerns to a more senior member of staff where appropriate

•    be vigilant and promptly raise suspicions of cheating with a more senior member of staff

•    collect examination scripts at the end of exam and help with reconciling final number counts

•    occasionally assist the Principal and Senior Invigilators in the completion of their duties to help ensure the smooth running of university examinations

•    treat all DMU staff, students, contractors and visitors with dignity and respect; provide a service that complies with the Equality Act 2010, eliminating unlawful discrimination, advancing equality of opportunity and fostering good relations with particular attention to the protected characteristics of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief (or none), sex and sexual orientation

•    this job reflects the main duties and responsibilities of the role. However, the role holder may be required to fulfil other ad-hoc duties commensurate with the level of the role from time to time

Skills and experience

Qualifications and Training

  • Educated to GCSE level with a minimum grade C in English and Maths, or with equivalent qualification or experience  

Previous Work Experience   

  • Experience of working in a highly controlled and regulated environment
  • Experience in a customer-focussed role
  • Experience of invigilating in an educational environment
  • Experience of working with individuals with a range of disabilities and/or medical conditions
  • Experience of emergency evacuation procedures    

Specific Knowledge / skills / abilities    

  • An appreciation of the key issues involved in exam invigilation
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people, verbally and in writing, whilst adapting style and format so it is most appropriate to the audience
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to remain calm within a high-pressure environment
  • Ability to work successfully with others as part of a team, under the supervision of another member of staff
  • Relevant experience that reflects an understanding of the importance of punctuality and reliability
  • An appreciation for the importance of maintaining strict confidentiality in an examination situation
  • Basic Health and Safety knowledge
  • A familiarity with the student support facilities available at DMU    

Motivation and Attitude Required    

  • Willingness to undertake specific and general training as required, in order to carry out role effectively
