Description

Role
The University of Edinburgh is currently offering a part-time opportunity for a student to join the Heritage Collections Team as an Anatomy Archives Intern. Heritage Collections oversee the University's Special Collections and Museums, which includes rare books, manuscripts, art, historic musical instruments and archives. Within this role, you will contribute to reorganising and maintaining the archives of the Anatomy Department, by reviewing the materials’ locations, labels and presentation to users. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to conduct research into key individuals, and compile authority records.

This is an exciting opportunity for you to gain experience with archival management processes, as well as undertaking research into notable individuals, which would be beneficial for a future career in the Heritage sector, or Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums.

You can expect to start work on the 17th February 2025 and work until May 2025. The successful student can expect to work 14 hours per week, worked between Monday-Friday, in the Centre for Research Collections, Main Library. During this position you will be paid £12.67 per hour, plus £2.29 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your first payment date (should this position start when expected) will be 28th March 2025.

The successful student should be aware of the possibility of encountering potentially triggering material, such as graphic imagery. Taking into account the historical nature of the material, the student should also be aware of the likelihood of encountering outdated and offensive terminology, and potentially disturbing narratives, whilst working in this role.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Filing individual, unbound material into archival folders, and labelling them accordingly;
  • Inserting label slips into bound volumes, for identification and organisation purposes;
  • Compiling a list of items requiring conservation assessment, and discussing with the conservator as required;

  • Optionally, researching and compiling authority records for key individuals.

Skills and experience

Essential criteria:

  • A current University of Edinburgh student (this post is designated for UoE student employment; therefore, you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). You also must not hold the position of ‘Resident Assistant’;
  • Based in the UK for the duration of the work, able to work on campus when required (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications), and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person if needed;
  • Evidence of a detail-oriented and methodical approach to work;
  • Ability to multi-task and solve problems as they arise;
  • Proven excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently, as well as within a team.
