This project builds on the success of the Book My Mind project, launched in September 2020 (by Debbie Burns, Student Advice and Wellbeing (SAW)), incorporating monthly ‘reading for wellbeing’ workshops and ‘wellbeing books’ spaces in the university libraries. In 2022 the ‘writing for wellbeing’ element was added, led by Anne-Marie Smith (School of Education).

This project, called ‘Finding space for me’: Exploring the benefits of reading and writing for wellbeing at university aims to enable student interns to work with the project leads to creatively evaluate the three strands of the Bibliotherapy initiative at LJMU:
-
Reading for Wellbeing (monthly workshops based on self-help books, e.g. Mindfulness)
-
Writing for Wellbeing (monthly workshops centred around key themes for personal growth, e.g. resilience, balance)
-
Bibliotherapy book collection and wellbeing spaces in the two university libraries
The project team (Anne-Marie Smith and Debbie Burns) would like to employ three interns to work alongside us to co-create research questions and methods to carry out a meaningful and effective evaluation of the three strands.
The interns will work together to gather perspectives from students (undergraduate and postgraduate) and staff (e.g. counselling team, librarians, personal tutors, academic staff) about the Bibliotherapy initiative (e.g. in relation to terminology used, labels and language of workshops, any barriers or detraction to attendance, suitability of format and venues, etc). In this way, the future of the bibliotherapy initiative can be shaped by student insights
