Role
*Ringfenced to LJMU students*
Are you passionate about enhancing the student experience and building supportive communities? We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic intern to work on a Curriculum Enhancement Internship project that aims to design and pilot a ‘Buddy Scheme' specifically tailored to support Civil Engineering and Built Environment students at LJMU. The goal is to gather evidence to understand whether a Buddy Scheme would be desired by students and how an effective scheme would be designed and implemented to meet student needs. A relevant Buddy Scheme has the potential to address the unique challenges faced by students in the school of Civil Engineering and Built Environment by fostering a supportive peer network and creating a more inclusive environment for all that prioritises student wellbeing. This project will provide an opportunity to develop project management and communication skills while making a meaningful impact on student life. This is an internship and as such should be seen as an education and career development opportunity, carried out under the strict guidance of LJMU staff.
Duties and responsibilities
We are seeking to employ two student interns to complete this project. The Interns will play a key role in researching, designing and piloting a peer-to-peer buddy scheme for students. This will include data collection and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data. Interns will leverage their positions as current students to ensure the data collection tools are relevant and help engage a broad student audience in the data collection process.
Key Responsibilities and Tasks include:
- Survey Development, Distribution and Analysis: Interns will assist with devising appropriate survey questions, promoting and distributing the survey to participants (students and staff), and preliminary analysis of survey results.
- Focus Group Facilitator and Data Analysis: Interns will recruit students to participate in focus groups, coordinate and facilitate the focus group discussions, transcribe any focus group recordings, and assist with preliminary analysis of the results. Using a student intern to lead the focus groups should assist in encouraging participants to have an open and in-depth conversation about their perceptions and preferences with regards to a buddy scheme.
- Validation and Piloting: Based on the results of the data collection, interns will assist in designing and piloting a relevant buddy scheme that meets student needs. This may involve recruiting a small group of potential buddy scheme participants/volunteers to run a pilot test and gain feedback on the initial process. Interns will assist in reporting and disseminating the project findings to stakeholders.
Skills and experience
A Level 6 (undergraduate) or Level 7 (postgraduate) LJMU student. Preferably studying a Civil Engineering and Built Environment course (but this is not essential and applications will be accepted from students on any course).
Knowledge and Skills:
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
- Strong understanding of quantitative and qualitative data collection and data analysis techniques.
- Experience with survey and focus group research is preferable.
- Proficiency in use of data analysis software (e.g. SPSS, Excel, NVivo) is desirable.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a small team.
- Confidence in networking with a diverse student body and academic staff.
- Interest in creating a supportive community that enhances student wellbeing.
