Are you passionate about writing and storytelling? Join the Communications and Insight team as a Student Journalist! This role is perfect for students who want to explore the world of communications and copywriting while showcasing the vibrant life at Middlesex University. 

As a Student Journalist, you'll have the chance to write engaging articles about student life, campus events, and the experiences that make Middlesex unique. Working within a dynamic team, you’ll develop transferable skills in storytelling, and audience engagement—valuable assets for your future career.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Write engaging articles about student life, campus events, and services. 

  • Create compelling and relatable stories that reflect the Middlesex University student experience. 

  • Conduct interviews with students, staff, and stakeholders to gather insights for stories. 

  • Stay updated on campus news, events, and trends to identify content opportunities. 

  • Assist with uploading and formatting content on social media & MDXSU website. 

  • Liaise with student groups and societies to spotlight their initiatives and events. 

  • Engage with student readers and gather feedback to improve content relevance and quality. 

  • Review and edit content to ensure clarity, accuracy, and alignment with the organisation’s tone of voice, values and guidelines. 

  • Experiment with storytelling formats to suit different platforms and audiences. 

  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines and maintaining high-quality standards. 

Skills and experience

Essential 

·       Strong written communication skills with the ability to create clear, engaging, and relatable content 

·       Strong time management skills and ability to meet deadlines

·       Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel packages  

·       Comfortable working in a self-directed way as well as part of the team 

·       Ability to generate original ideas and tell compelling stories 

·       Enthusiasm for exploring and highlighting student experiences and campus events 

·       Openness to learning new tools, systems, and skills to support content creation and digital publishing 

Desirable 

·       Studying in a relevant area such as journalism, digital marketing, or marketing communications 

·       Experience writing for blogs, newsletters, or student publications. 

·       Awareness of what appeals to different audiences, particularly students. 

·       Confidence in conducting interviews and gathering information to develop stories.
