This role is an exciting opportunity for you if you would like to learn how to perform cell culture of cancer cell lines. The intern will be trained in the technique in the MDX cell culture labs in the Hatchcroft building. The intern will assist in preparing cell stocks for commercialisation of cell lines with an external company.
This role will also give the intern the opportunity to help run a chemistry education outreach programme for primary school students. Students will be coming to Middlesex for a taster day in the Laboratory doing a special lab called practical potions as well as assembling Molymod molecular models.
Duties and responsibilities
Making cell culture media, feeding cancer cell lines. Performing cytotoxicity assays and preparing frozen stocks of cell lines.
Making up solutions for the chemistry outreach programme and setting up the laboratory. Packing take home Middlesex bags for the students. Acting as a lab tutor for the outreach days.
Skills and experience
Essential
-
Current student or alumni of BSc or MSc Biomedical Science or similar programme.

Experience working in laboratories from university practical classes or dissertation projects

Strong time management skills and ability to meet deadlines

Experience with Microsoft Excel packages

Comfortable working in a self-directed way as well as part of a team

This internship is a perfect starting point for a student or recent graduate who is interested in working in science laboratories as a technician or researcher. Practical laboratory experience will allow the intern to sell themselves at future job interviews as someone who has done the techniques themselves not just learned about them in class.

You will be mentored by Dr Britta Stordal who is the principal investigator of the cancer cell line project as well as the project lead for the Practical Potions Chemistry Outreach Programme.
