This role is an exciting opportunity for you if you would like to gain practical experience in IT support within a higher education environment. The role is designed to give you practical, hands-on experience with hardware and software support, maintenance of services, and troubleshooting. The job will also help you strengthen your soft skills by providing technical assistance to the faculty and students, writing documentation for hardware installs and presenting work within team meetings.
The role will focus on day-to-day tasks within the technical team but also give the candidate opportunities to contribute to research and projects, which can be tailored to the individuals’ requirement. There will also be opportunities to represent the University for outreach events and design have-a-go demonstrations or demonstrate existing works.
This is an excellent opportunity for candidates looking to gain practical experience in IT support within a higher education environment. You will be given a mentor who will provide you with support and guidance throughout your role.
Duties and responsibilities
• Technical Support: Provide first-level technical support to university staff and students, resolving basic hardware and software issues.
• Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and peripheral issues for over many desktops and laptops within the faculty.
• Equipment Setup: Assist in setting up and configuring desktops, laptops, and other devices for new users, including installing software.
• Routine Maintenance: Perform routine hardware checks, software updates, and maintenance tasks on campus computer systems.
• Projects: Work independently or within a team to deliver a tangible project within your 8-week placement.
• Documentation: Create documentation for any project work and any future guidance for common troubleshooting tasks to help faculty staff and students.
• Collaboration: Work closely with senior technicians and other team members to resolve more complex issues and escalate when necessary.
Skills and experience
Essential
• Currently enrolled (or recently graduated) in a STEM related program such as Computer Science, Design Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering etc.
• Basic understanding of Windows, MacOS and optionally Linux Operating Systems• Ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues quickly and efficiently
• Ability to think out of the box / lateral approach to solving problems• Strong verbal and written communication skills; with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users
• Strong time management skills and ability to meet deadlines
• Good customer service skills including patience and a friendly demeanour when assisting students and staff.
Desirable, but not essential or mandatory
• Basic scripting skills for automating routine tasks for different operating systems
• Programming experience with a few languages
• Logical/methodical approach to troubleshooting
• Basic networking knowledge
